Has anyone ever participated in this? I'm going to a meeting in Arlington tonight about it. I've always wanted to be a part of the walk but just have actually done it.
My great aunt (my dads aunt) died of breast cancer, my grandmother (my dads mom) had a mastectomy 2 weeks ago, and my aunt (my dads sister) just found out her breast cancer is back--so now this is something that I've taken a personal interest into.
Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone has done this or would even want to walk with me in November.
Re: 3 Day breast cancer walk
I've done it. If I have more time tonight, I will write more than this. This is just the beginning...
I would do it again, just for the personal challenge. Would I do again because I really think it does that much for breast cancer? No, I think most of the money raised goes to overhead.
The hardest part for me was fundraising. It's a lot of work to raise money. I have a friend who easily raises money but she works for AT&T and they match every penny she raises.
The year I did it, they had it in June. They hospitalized people left and right, people were in serious danger. It was awful. We walked through several very rough neighborhoods. Since then they have moved the walk and I think they generally walk through much better neighborhoods.
My favorite part of it was the team I was on, I got to know girls I didn't know before the walk. A
I would love to not have to fundraise and just be able to pay for it.
I hope this helps.
I did it in November of 08 and it was amazing....great experiance and weather was perfect. Raising money was pretty easy for me, but I definately had to get creative. I think the whole experiance was really powerful and inspiring, I come from a huge family of women with breast cancer.
I will agree with techdg26 that there are a few things about Susan G. Komen that I have issues with but all in all, it was amazing and it does help to walk with a team.
Please e-mail me at kimedmiston@gmail.com if you want more info or have any more questions.
Thanks for the input.
I can see where the overhead would be expensive and questionable at times with the amount required to raise, but I also think that a lot of good has come from the Komen Foundation too. I work for a non-profit and sometimes I just shake my head and roll my eyes at the stuff that goes on here. It's not right or wrong, just the way it is.
That being said, I did register to be a team capatin and walk. You have to pay $90 to register and then raise $2300. Of course, if you're on a team and other members raised more than the minimum then you can just divide it out over the team to make it less for others to raise. So I guess that's nice. The walk is not until November 5-7th so there is PLENTY of time to raise money and start training to walk 60 miles.
So please, if you would like to walk with me on my team (which is just myself right now, lol) let me know.
