Storage/organization for baby stuff?

I'm sitting here staring at all the new stuff we have for G..and there is no room at the inn, believe me!  I've got the high chair and playpen stuffed in my closet, everything else is in rubbermaid containers in the middle of the living room.  Our nursery is under construction, which doesn't help.

Is there any trick to this?  G already has more clothes than he will ever wear before he outgrows them.  I'm thinking of doing baskets for his clothes that don't fit in the dresser I have yet to find, and little hat boxes for things like socks, shoes, etc..If you bought containers or have storage secrets, please share.

Re: Storage/organization for baby stuff?

  • I bought a couple of these from IKEA to hang in Geneva's closet. They're awesome.

  • I sorta rotate stuff out by season and size. I keep a large plastic container for them. You'll probably be surprised at how much stuff actually goes unused. When things start getting snug I pull larger sizes out. Geez for such little people their lil clothes are hard to deal with, huh??
  • For clothes he has outgrown but we want to save in case #2 is a boy we put them in space bags and then put all the bags in a rubbermaid bin.  For toy storage we got the bookcases from Ikea and the baskets that go in all of the cubes.  They also had a lot of closet organizer stuff at Ikea.  It can't be beat- for the price at least!

  • I've pretty much kept everything that he is currently wearing in his dresser and everything else in the closet. As he went through sizes, I would pack up the ok'd stuff and yak the new clothes out of the closet and wash them. I also got some ikea organizing things to put in his dresser for socks, hats, diapers, all of the little clippers and diaper creams, etc.... With all the new stuff just sitting around, it seems a little daunting. But you'll get a system figured out. It's all so cute!

No doubt!  I washed everything from the shower and it took two hours to sort and fold it all.  Those little socks are out of control!

  • At the beginning, I only washed the Newborn/0-3 month clothes and hung them in the closet (but she has a walk-in closet). The others I would put in plastic bins and only bring them out as she outgrew the others. The pjs, socks, etc I put in her dresser. You'll figure out your own system. Once his room is done, it will definitely help.

  • Def. get some kind of bookcase or shelf w/ bins.  I am always surprised at how many of her toys I can cram in those bins.  We have built ins in the den that I keep some of the bigger toys in.  I use the top of her dresser as a changing table so in the top dresser drawer I keep diapers and wipes.  I keep socks and tights in the other top drawer.  Then middle drawer has pj's and the bottom drawer has stuff that's too small and ready to go to consignment/goodwill, etc.  I usually wait until the next season and take a big load.  In the closet I keep blankets and sheets folded and hang as many outfits as I can.  The rest of the missmatched stuff goes in w/ pj's.

  • We bought an over the door shoe organizer in cloth and mesh and kept all the little hats and bibs and burp cloths because we were always using them. I washed any hand-me downs in baby detergent and kept a few items that had tags on them unwashed. I was unsure of his size (I thought he was going to be a big baby). Most gifts from people will be clothes and toys. Ditto on the storage bags, those work well to organize clothes in seasons and sizes.
