Anyone ever been to or thrown an engagement dinner?

I'm throwing one for forty of our closest friends for a guy friend of mine.  Do you think it would be cheesy to do sort of a roast for him?  They are super fun people and I was trying to think of what else I could do to make it memorable for them.  Any advice is appreciated!  Thanks!!

  • I have thrown an engagement party for my brother and SIL. Maybe something along the lines of "Remember when toast, speech,.jokes, etc."  We did this at my class reunion and it was a hit because if you graduated in our class you knew all the funny "remember when jokes."  I would be cautious of using the word "roast" because that would mean anything goes and the roast I've seen on TV are funny but also embarassing and mean.  I know it is all in good fun but I would hate for it to turn into a tacky or tastless moment at an engagement party.  Also I would include the bride.  Just my 2cents.

  • Thanks I think you are absolutely right! Good advice :)  Thanks honey!
  • I've had two thrown FOR me....both were more on the dressy side.  Both fun, but probably not in the way you're hoping to do.   I agree on including the bride for sure...and just be careful about how far the jokes go.  You'd hate to have a called-off engagement when the bride hears "that story from 10 years ago...you know...that time at band camp" ;)

  • I have been to tons and I agree w/ pp's.  Good natured jokes during the toasts are fun and appropriate.  The best of the ones I've been to kept the dress code dressy but the mood light.  I guess it all depends on the couple though.
