Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Quick question for the newest mamas....

Hi ladies!  I figured I could post this here since you all have "been there, done that"...

I'm not sure what to do about buying a few nursing items for post delivery.   Obviously I don't expect to be back in my 'normal' size clothing for months after delivery, but what should I expect?  I've heard that post delivery is like going back to 5 or 6 months pregnant size.....?

(BTW, I want to get started packing the hospital bag, etc. and I'm planning to get at least one nursing bra, a nursing tank, and maybe a nursing gown.  Any feedback there would be welcome, too!)

Re: Quick question for the newest mamas....

  • I'm still wearing most of my maternity clothes! I just recently bought some new jeans cause I got so sick of maternity pants! But like everything in pregnancy and having a baby, everyone is different! I'd bring maternity clothes to come home though!

  • I was back in my larger prepreg jeans a week after I had my son, and back in all my clothes within 3 weeks.  I wore sweats the first week.  Im kind of a freak, tho.

  • I would say that after delivery I was down to the size I was around 5 months pregnant (so I lived in yoga pants and was still in maternity jeans) and within a week I was down to right around 3-4 months pregnant (but I was showing early).  I got a nursing tank in my pre pregnancy size from Old Navy and it fit perfectly.  I got 1 nursing bra to start out with and got it 1 size bigger and it fit big at first and then when my milk came in fit perfectly.  Hope that helps!

  • I was back down to pre-preg weight  5 days after birth. And in some of my pre-preg clothes 1 week after.

But I'd stick with either maternity clothes or sweats for the first few days. Your "bottom" will thank you

  • I would bring maternity clothes and a nursing tank and buy a bra later because you do not know what size you will be until after your milk comes in.
  • I am kind of in an awkward transition stage now, but just out of the hospital I was still wearing maternity clothes.  I had some of the Motherhood Maternity pants with the full belly panel that have been great for postpartum.

I am finding that I am loosing the weight a lot faster than I expected.  I gained over 40 pounds during my pregnancy and less than 2 weeks after delivery I only have 16 pounds left to loose.  I am sure breast feeding has helped me loose the weight (although as long as I have these milk jugs I think I have a couple of pounds of leeway on the scale).  I am able to wear some of my pre-pregnancy clothes that were on the big side now.

  • You all have been so helpful! Thanks for the realistic advice (and hope - haha!)

  • I bought one nursing tank and one bra before I had LO.  I only ended up using the nursing tank in the hospital, I found it easier to just wear the tank rather than the bra with another shirt.  LO ate every 2 hours or so for 30 minutes at a time so dealing with an outer shirt while trying to figure out BF would have been a pain.  Once I found out if they fit and that I liked them I had my mom go out and pick up some more of the same thing.
  • You just never know... I gained 30 lbs. I lost the weight very quickly, now I'm slightly under my pre-preg weight. However, I do NOT fit in my regular jeans. DS is six weeks old and I still wear yoga/sweat pants or maternity jeans with the full panel folded over.

Also, I was so swollen after giving birth that I was way bigger in every single area except for my belly.

I'd recommend nursing tanks in a size bigger than you were pre-preg. Target has good, stretchy, affordable ones.

  • When I left the hospital I was about my 5 month pregnant size and within 5 days I was back to my normal size! All I wore was yoga pants and finally the other day I wore my jeans! woohoo! :) I'm definitely still jiggly, but fit into all of my prepregnancy clothing now... I just don't wear the tight shirts! haha!

  • My baby is 6 days old. ?I look like I did at about 20 - 24 weeks. I've been wearing yoga pants/sweats with zip up hoodies and tank tops since I changed out of my hospital gown the day after delivery. ?I don't have any special nursing tanks. ?I just use the ones from Express with the built in bra. ?They have been working great. ??
