CD mamas - help me out!

We start our cloth diapering in a few short weeks and I've got one big concern-

How the heck do I know when DD is wet?  With disposables I can pinch the bottom of the diaper and feel the gel inside if they are wet - but the few times I've done practice runs with the cloth diapers, I can't tell she's wet without sticking my finger to the diaper.

also fyi - we're doing a mix of prefolds with bummis covers, bumgenuis AIO and fuzzibunz.

  • With prefolds you can pull back the cover and tell by looking at them... different color.  I personally always assume DD is wet.  I change her 30 minutes after eating, this is when they seem the heavier, and every 1- 1.5 the same as if they were in a sposie. And yep the finger test always works tooBig Smile

  • I used to nanny an 18-month old who was in CDs and I would just check/change her every hour or so, sometimes she'd be wet and sometimes she wouldn't. I don't know how much more frequently newborns go through dipes but maybe just check her frequently.
  • i just change every 2-3 hours or so.  You will learn which diapers do better than others, too.  I adjust the time depending on the diaper sometimes.

Exactly.  Unless DS poops we just change every 2 hours (sometimes it stretches to 3 with naps, meals, etc...).  We use pockets and AIO's with a stay-dry inner, but if we used fitteds or prefolds I might change a bit more often even.
