Feeding on Just One Side?

DD only feeds on one side at each feeding. I'm not really worried about her getting enough to eat, as she has lots of poo/wet diapers and has already gained back her birth weight. However, I'm worried about my supply.

Did anyone else's baby do this? How long does it usually last?

Re: Feeding on Just One Side?

  • My baby does this and I let her eat on one side and the next feeding make her eat on the other.

  • DD will usually only feed on one side too. Maybe 1 or 2 times a day she'll take both.

This.  He doesn't like to switch breast, so he feeds from one then I switch to the other.  At times he's really hungry and feeds from both.

  • DD did the same thing.  For the most part, she still only nurses on one side (although during a growth spurt she'll occasionally do both sides) and she's three months old.  It's perfectly fine and according to some lactation consultants it's good because it means that the breast she's feeding from is really getting empty and she's getting lots of good hind milk.  Just alternate which side you start on at each feeding.  Frankly, I think it's more convenient for me to only have to do one side.
  • For the first few weeks, this is what DD did and i just alternated breasts.  As she started to eat more, she started to nurse from both breasts in one sitting.
  • DS does this.  At first I would do both, but then I guess he became more efficient because he just wants one side now.  As pp said, it's more convenient for me, so I don't mind!

  • DS does this too. My LC said it wasn't a big deal- just alternate sides at each feeding. She recommended a bracelet or safety pin to the bra to indicate which side was last done so you don't forget.

  • My baby still only eats on one side, and sometimes at the end of the feeding I can still easily squeeze more out (if she's fussy I check to see if she is probably still getting good flow) so I think it's going to be a while before we need to use both sides, if ever.

For me it's easy to tell what side she is due to eat on (one feels fuller than the other)

  • Thanks ladies! I've been alternating sides each feeding and will just keep doing that...it definitely is more convenient for me!
