XP: Any BFing attorneys?

I will be going back to work in a couple of weeks and there are days where I spend a lot of time at court (it varies from once a week, once every two weeks, or could be 3 times a week), which makes it hard to pump.  Did you feel as if you had to give up on pumping during the day and go to just nursing morning and night, and using formula during the day once your freezer stash is gone?  I am really worried that the random day here and there where I am at court and can't get to a pump for 4-5 hours will greatly hurt my supply.

Any thoughts, ideas, or whatever would be great.  TIA

Re: XP: Any BFing attorneys?

  • I'm not an attorney, but a paralegal that is in court frequently. I try and pump during the day if I can because I have found that it hurts my supply otherwise. They have car adapters for breast pumps. I haven't pumped in the car. If I know that I have to be out, I try and pump right before I go.

I will say that if you aren't able to pump during the day make sure that you wear a padded bra for leakage protection.

  • I am.  I actually am a new attorney also.  The 1st week of my job, I really struggled with whether to stop or not for the exact reason you mentioned.  I made the decision to just go with the flow.  I pump when I can.  If we have an EH or I have a full morning calendar, I do what I can.  If I can't pump til noon, I can't.  If I can only pump once or twice during the day, so be it.  I wear breastpads, so if I go a little longer than usual, it is what it is.  So far, I haven't had to supplement (but I will be starting)  and I am okay with giving him a bottle of formula a day.

    Good Luck!

  • I'm not an attorney but a Paralegal for a corporation so I attend court with consel regularly as a representative for my co. I do the same as PP and pump when I can. I pump regularly in my car under a beach towel. I typically time my day so I can arrive about 30 minutes early and do a quick pump in the car in the parking lot of the courthouse. I keep a little cooler in there with an ice pack and just add bottles to it throughout the day on breaks etc.. Sometimes though my car is too far to go so I have pumped in break rooms, conference rooms and bathroom stalls. My medela was too big to lug around with all my documents so I got myself the Evenflo comfort select single breast pump. Here is a link to it https://www.evenflo.com/product.aspx?id=44. It is small and will run on 3 AA batteries, no cord required so I can keep it in my bag with one or two spare bottles. Breastmilk will keep at room temp for 3-4 hours so I pump on breaks real quick and just toss the bottles in my bag with the little pump and go on with my day. The pump is a little loud but I don't care, it get's the job done. It is great for a quick bathroom stall pump or for when I have to fly.  Some airports now have mother's rooms so I use those now for pumping and it works out great.
  • Thanks ladies!

The car was what I was thinking I'd have to do, when and if we do have breaks that I can go out.  At one of the courthouses I go to there is a small office that I can use, so I will try and bring my pump in with me.  I might check out that evenflo so it will fit in my bag instead of bringing in an extra bag with me.

  • i am a bfing law student.  i have an internship at court and pump in the bathroom there unfortunately.  i have been pumping for a month and 2x i had to miss a pumping session b/c i just could not take a break.  i think it's ok for my supply as long as that only happens once in a while.  GL.
  • I am an attorney. While I don't normally have court days where I am there long enough to worry about pumping, I rain into this with my deposition schedule when I was pumping.  I usually pumped in the car right before I go in, squeezed a session in at lunch, and pumped as soon as I was finished for the day.

Just pump whenever you can; a missed session here and there won't be the end of the world.  Good luck.

    This.

If you want to keep breastfeeding, do it.  If your supply drops, supplement a little.  There's nothing wrong with that. But I wouldn't preemptively stop BF-ing if you're otherwise enjoying it because of what might happen.

    Best wishes!

  • How old will your LO be when you go back to work? If it's around 3-4 mos your supply should be established and 4-5 hours should be no problem. That being said, I was a milk machine, so my supply wasn't as touch and go as it is for some people.  I'm a transactional attorney, but I definitely know what it's like when your day is never planned...
  • I don't know if you are still checking responses, I am an attorney although I no longer BF.  When I was BFing and pumping, in addition to all the other out of office events, I actually had 2 jury trials.  I pumped in my car - alot.  During trials, I normally pumped on my way to court and then took my pump into the courthouse (got'ta tell you, I started enjoying the looks and questions as I went through security! LOL) .  During lunch breaks, I would find a spot to pump, either go to my car or use a restroom or other designated "lawyer room".  I would have to tell my clients that I needed to be excused for 20 minutes or so (they never asked questions)  Not ideal, but you make it work.  I made it work until about 9 months when my LO started to refuse to nurse (after biting for about 2 days) Good luck!
