AW: Kitchen redo! (PIPs)

It has taken forrrrever, but our kitchen redo is finally (almost) complete! Just have to choose tiles for the backsplash (any suggestions on color?), and put up the rest of the cabinet hardware. But I thought I'd post some pix, since before/after kitchens were such a hot topic a few months ago...

  • That is awesome!!  Gorgeous and it looks like a totally different house now!
  • Thanks, all! :) It was my grandmother's house before she passed away 8 years ago, so I was actually a little sentimental about the old yellow version (and hated to lose that one window!)... but I'm really happy with how everything turned out.

How do you like the integrated sink?  We are building a house and we are excited about having smooth surface countertops and an integrated sink.  What material is your faucet?

  • Wow! It doesn't even look like the same kitchen at all. I love it! I also love the rug in your dining area.

  • GORGEOUS. So jealous of all your counterspace. Really beautiful.

Quick question: How did you decide whether or not to go all the way to the ceiling with the cabinets? The previous owners of our house updated our (very small) kitchen, and didn't do the cabinets all the way to the ceiling either. Lord knows we need the storage space so I wonder why they didn't do one more shelf up and close the space. Thoughts??

Thanks! I LOVE the sink (so far)... it's so easy to just sweep things right into it off the countertop. And the faucet is stainless... I think Delta brand, from Lowe's.

  • Wow! I love it! It looks totally different, I like the cabinets and the granite Smile

Unfortunately the ceiling is angled on the window side, so we had no choice but to stop the cabinets lower... and I thought about making them higher just on the stove side, but worried it would look too off-balance, since the corner cabinet would have been lower. We could've used the storage space too... it's definitely not a huge kitchen! That's mainly why I added the cabinets on the dining side of that divider wall... to make up for lost space. They are the tallest available wall cabinets (so only 13" deep), just mounted on the floor instead. Worked out pretty well!

  • Wow, it looks amazing!  nice job.
  • Impressive.  Your kitchen is shaped a lot like ours, so I'm taking notes.

  • Beautiful! I love the breakfast bar. We're in the midst of a never-ending MB remodel, I'll be so excited when it's done.
  • Great job!!
  • Love it! I would go for a brushed nickel subway tile backplash or something like that.

I really like that rug in your dining room - where did you find it?

Ooh, interesting idea on the backsplash. At first I thought a matte black glass tile, but I didn't want the dark color to be too overwhelming, so lately I've been thinking more of a sand color glass tile, to pull out the brown in the granite.

Rug is from Overstock! It was relatively cheap and exactly the size I wanted... I think this is it, just a foot bigger: https://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Cafe-Floral-Rug-89-Square/4469695/product.html

  • wow!  nice job.  did you do the work yourself???

Only partially. :) My dad is pretty good at this stuff, so he did the tile (I did the grout... yay, me!) and he'll do the backsplash. Then a friend of our family is a contractor, so he took the window out and put the cabinets in. He also passed along his Lowe's discount to us, so that was reallllly helpful with the cost of appliances, cabinets, faucet, hardware, etc. Granite was installed through Lowe's, too.
