Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How often should BF babies poop?

I BF but just returned to work Monday so DH is giving LO bottles during the day. The dr told us to start putting rice cereal in the BM to try to keep him from spitting up because he has severe reflux. (LO eats about 3 - 3.5 oz at a time & we're putting 1 Tbsp. for every 2 oz... so about 1.5 Tbsp. per bottle.)

The problem is, LO hasn't pooped since Monday afternoon. I have eard they can get constipated with the rice cereal... is this common he hasn't been pooping  since he's not on formula?

I'm going to call the dr in an hour to check, too.

  • For EBF, "normal" can range from 1x/week to every feeding. DS is EBF and goes ~2x/week. What matters is consistency (soft) and color (yellow).

  • As long as he doesn't seem uncomfortable, he's probably fine. It's normal for EBF'd babies to only go once a week sometimes. And I heard that at around 2 months their pooping habits change. I wasn't sure if that was true until about 2 weeks ago, since then my DS has been pooping once every 3 or 4 days, and the consistency has changed, it's not that seedy mustard stuff anymore......and it is RANK! lol
  • I EBF DD and she poops 2 to 3 times/week. Like PPs said, it's totally normal for breastfed babies to not poop that much.
