OMG the swelling! Advice?

I had a c-section on Friday and I have had swollen ankles and feet since then. The swelling got worse when I got home from the hospital. I am drinking tons of liquids (my milk is in full blast). Baby and I are still trying to figure out breastfeeding, especially since I am in a constant state of leaking. Any advice on ways to reduce the swelling? My aunt (who is a nurse) said the swelling will go done once my milk regulates, but I am looking for some relief until baby and I can figure out the whole milk regulating issue.

  • I had the WORST swelling of my feet!! My feet looked like fat bastered haha!! They did eventually go down, it took about a week. I was panicking so bad but my doctor said it was from the c-section, that your water redistributes and it tends to go to the feet. Dont worry theres hope:)

  • Mine got worse too, and when the nurse came to visit me, she said I needed to drink 3xs what I was drinking so I could pee more. Two days later, the swelling started going down.
  • I don't mean to burst your bubble, but you're going to be swollen in your feet, legs and ankles for about 2 weeks, probably.  This is normal.  Keep drinking your fluids and understand that your feet, ankles, and legs will probably hurt worse than your c-section incision (mine did for both of my c-sections).

I had Shrek feet.  Not cool.  Literally 20 POUNDS in fluid.  I hurt so bad walking up stairs trying to bend those feet.  It DOES go down eventually, though, but it took 2 weeks for the bad stuff to go away for me--and 3 weeks to get back to "normal" (my feet grew a size with each pregnancy).

FWIW, I have never heard anything about the milk regulating thing.  They pump you full of oxytocin/pitocen to get your uterus to contract after c-section.  This makes you retain water.  And yes, it usually does get worse after you get home from the hospital.

  • Like others have said... totally normal and will take about 2 weeks to go away.  When I came home from the hospital after giving birth I had lost a whole 2 lbs!  2 weeks later I was down 30 lbs... it was all fluid!

I had a ton of swelling before my c-section and it just got worse afterwards.  The swelling was all the way up in my abs and butt.  I could hardly bend my legs... it was so painful! My doctor waited a week to take out my staples because of the swelling.

Hang in there... it will go away soon enough... and then you can wear socks and real shoes again!

  • I didn't have a c-section, but was on IV fluids for the 12 hours I was in labor (they gave me antibiotics b/c I was GBS+ and my water broke).. My legs looked like elephant legs, it wa so scary, and yes, painful.. I had wrinkles around my ankles.  Mind you, I had not had swollen feet DURING my pregnancy at all, so it was all from delivery.  Yes.. drink LOTS of fluid to help pee it all out.. and keep your feet up as much as possible, just to help with pain.  It took about a week or two for it to all go away.. really wild...they told me that since the baby was out of my body.., the fluid from uterus was redistributing and goes down b/c of gravity...?? don't know connection with breastfeeding?

  • i was more swollen after i had ds than the day we went to the hospital!  i had to send dh to get bigger undies so i could stop wearing the mesh panties.

i just drank a lot of water.  i mean...3-4 1 liter bottles a day.  it was about two weeks pp before my body looked normal.  almost 6 weeks before i could wear most of my shoes and my rings.

honestly i was shocked at the swelling i had in my midsection.

  • I was told to expect swelling in my hands, feet and face from all the fluid looking for a way out. Luckily it found my bladder! In the hospital my first day a few hours after I delivered they had to cath me and got 1600 ml of pee out of me. Apparently I was the talk of the nurses for having that much in my bladder.
