We are definitely struggling with what to feed Eve lately. If it were up to her, she would eat only cheese all day long..I can't say I blame her.. but I would like her to eat veggies and fruits.
So far I can't get her to pick up fruits and veggies and eat them or eat them if I feed them to her.. So we're on purees for that.. *I'm* okay with that.. she is not.. its a battle most times to get her to eat one tub/jar of purees. She used to eat them fine.. but now she things grown up food is much more fun.
So for lunch today she ate about a quarter of a grilled cheese sandwich (I gave her half but half of that probably landed on the floor).. and a tub of fruit.. Does that sound like enough? It doesn't really to me.. This is day 3 of no mid-afternoon bottle.. so she just has bottles when she wakes up, around 5pm and at bedtime..
Dinners are even harder, because its rare that we all eat dinner together.. half the nights I'm at work, and many more DH is at work.. so I need to figure out what I can leave her for dinner that MIL can heat up and give her..
I also need more ideas on what to feed her.. We've done grilled cheese,
mac and cheese, quesedillas.. She eats meat when we eat it for
lunch/dinner but I've never made it just for her.. She's not ready to
just pick up a sandwich and take bites of it..
Re: Lets talk older baby/toddler foods.
That sounds like a decent amount of food for her to eat. Evan ate about 3/4 grilled cheese today (minus the crust and about 1/4 of it which the dog ate) and some sweet potato cubes dipped in applesauce... but he his a big eater, and probably about the same size as Eve I would guess (20lbs). From what I've read/heard their appetites can change from day to day and meal to meal, but they won't starve themselves!
Evan has been turning away from purees too, but I still give him some since he isn't eating a ton of finger foods yet. He doesn't like whole veggies (except potatoes) so I still make sure he gets them in puree form, but sometimes "hide" them in what he eats. (I spread some on the bread of his grilled cheese, or mix them w/ mac & cheese for example) Will she eat eggs (I sneak in some purees to those too)? they are Evans fave lately, but he hated them at first. He doesn't really do well with meat yet. We just let him try what we are having, and the only thing he liked so far was pork tenderloin and meatloaf. I just bought some ground turkey today, so I'm going to make him up some mini meatballs w/ it. He eats a lot of pasta or brown rice for dinner, mixed w/ a pureed veggie as a "sauce". I've tried to give him beans, but he wasn't a huge fan. He also loves pancakes, waffles and french toast... all of which I give him for dinner (I figure DH and I eat "brinner" like once a week, so he can too!) I always add in some mashed bananas or frozen blueberries to the pancake/waffle mix so he has some fruit w/ it.
That is funny that she will only eats cheese! Does she just eat like little cubes of it? I tried giving Evan some really small pieces of cheese for a snack yesterday and he just gagged!
Evan's favs are: banana pancakes - I make them from scratch to make it a bit healthier...but bisquick works too. I pour the pancakes on the griddle and then place thinly sliced bananas on top. I cook them mostly on that one side and then flip them for a few minuteson the banana side. I make enough for him to eat the next day too. Last night I added strawberries.
His other fav is pasta - any kind...I made ziti the other night (I make it with sausage and ricotta and mozz, I guess it's more like a lasagna) Next time I'm going to add mushrooms and broccoli or other veggies.
I've done grilled cheese with a little bit of pasta sauce or diced tomatoes in there. I haven't done meat yet, but I am planning on putting some thin slices of turkey in there too.
He likes quiche (with bisquick...so it's a little more sturdy for grabbing) and I had cheese and veggies in there.
For something a bit easier, I make him those frozen veggie in cheese (like broccoli in cheese sauce)...on the stovetop with some extra water. I'll cook them extra long until they are mushy.
In the beginning, to help him with picking up fruit I would crush graham crackers in a baggie, out the fruit in and shake it up. This was great for little banana chunks. (He has had a banana, in some form, almost every day since he was like 5 months old...he loves them!)
I actually just pulled down a toddler cookbook this morning to take a peek for new ideas....this is a ROUGH age!!! It's so easy to just feed them carbs, carb and more carbs! I really want him to eat fruits and veggie too.
I give string cheese and just rip off small pieces.. She LOVES it. She did like black beans when she had them a few months ago.. I fed them to her with a spoon. I tried corn the same way the other day and it was a no-go..

It's become a real battle for us in the last few weeks. Something he loves one day he won't eat the next. Now when it's something he doesn't want he shakes his head no and smacks the spoon, which is just great. I made ravioli for dinner- he wants nothing to do with it. So I'm scrambling some veggies into a few eggs- a safe standby.
It's so confusing with what they will eat and how much to give, I feel your pain.
Dinner is tough sometimes for us too- G doesn't always eat a full hot meal because it's just the two of us most nights.
Old stand by foods are scrambled egg, omlet, mini ravioli & beans, peas & cheese (frozen peas and tiny star pasta drained with some parm or deli cheese melted in), hummus on anything, cream cheese & fruit on toast, lentil soup, meatballs in soup, english muffin pizza.
I don't know what you tried already but G had a hard time with some fruit because it took so long for her teeth to come in- alot of the fresh fruit like pears had to be really ripe to be soft enough for her. This and this I recently discovered and I try to keep them on hand to add to her plate (I like that it's not in syrup like many others and they are soft). Many of the fruit and veggies these days are thawed- blue berries are a big a big hit; I'll stick them in yogurt or oatmeal or on cream cheese & toast as a jelly. She also likes an apple scraped bite by bite with a spoon or apple sauce if it's warmed. Maybe she would like fruit speared on a fork that she can feed herself just like you?
No babies in our house yet but when I worked in daycare the kids loved having soup- like vegetable soup with most of the broth drained out. ?The veggies are soft and it's still easy for them to feed themselves. ?What about diced meat- like turkey or ham? ?That's something that she'd be able to do on her own also. ?
It seems like she is looking for independence- wanting to eat like a big girl!?
Lunch is usually a slice or two of turkey, ham, or chicken deli meat, a cheese stick, and some type of fruit. I get the little fruit cocktail cups, drain the liquid, and let him go at it straight out of the cup. Sometimes it's chicken nuggets or the previous night's leftovers.
We have no clue when Ian's going to push his food away or clean his plate. When it's just him and I for dinner, I'll marinate and cook a chicken breast, cut up half of it for him and have a grilled chicken salad for me.
He loves pasta. Spaghetti is a little tough because it's hard for him to grab, but any other chunky type pasta (penne, ziti), he loves. He is a huge fan of vodka sauce, probably because it doesn't have the acidic bite of regular sauce.
Ian just started eating a bun with a hot dog or cheeseburger. We'll typically just cut it up into little pieces.
If you have it in your area - Schwan's makes a veggie and pasta mix that Ian loves. It has mini bowtie pasta with corn, peas, and carrots. All I have to do is put some in a strainer and run it under hot water until the pasta is thawed, usually only about a minute.
