Update on the hardwood floor saga

I posted last week (sorry, don't know how to link to original post) that I discovered a bunch of water under DD's foam tiles had ruined our beautiful, 90-year-old hardwood floors. NNO had some helpful advice about how to fix it, but sadly, I have new info.

It turns out the water was not something DD had spilled, as I originally thought. It's coming from the radiator or a leaking pipe in the walls/under the floor. The plumber came today and said he has to tear up the floor in that entire part of the LR to get at the problem. So now not only do we have to replace the damaged floor boards, we have to replace however many need to be taken apart to get at the problem. Plus, figure out a way to keep DD away from the gaping hole in the floor in the interim. I have a headache just thinking about it.

  • That sucks! We also have hardwood floors form 1902. In order to replace them could you maybe take some planks from a closet so they will still match?
  • Yikes!

We have 90 year old floors, too.  There are a few spots that we need to totally replace.  The previous owners had covered the entire house in Astro Turf and really skanky carpet - the dining room & hallway are icky.  I have no idea what we're going to do, though ... Good luck!

  • Ooh, that's bad.  But at least it wasn't your DD's fault.

I like the idea of using hardwoods from a closet.

  • Oh, my....
The photo made me sad. No one wants beautiful hardwoods ruined like that. So sorry. : (
  • In our last house we had hardwood floors in our kitchen, dining, guest bath and hallway.  Well, our garbage disposal broke and we had a plumber install a new one.  Apparently, the plumber did not install is properly and it caused our dishwasher to back-up and water leaked underneath the hardwood floor.  It ruined the flooring the entire length of the kitchen and half the width (galley kitchen).  It took us two days to notice the problem.  Long story short, we had to pull up the damaged boards, replace them and then have the entire hardwood floor refinished (in all rooms).

I'm sorry you are going through this and I can totally feel your pain.  Once the floors are refinished you won't even know the difference.  I think it took the installer a week to replace the boards and refinish.  I definitely recommend hanging plastic sheeting to minimize the dust spread.  You will have a lot of cleaning to do once it's done, I'm sorry to say.  Crying  GL with everything!

  • Is this covered by your insurance?  So sorry for you!  I know it's definitely a headache.  Good luck!

(and when you originally posted, I thought WHAT could a toddler spill to make that much damage?)
