Babies on the Brain

Is anyone here lactose free?

And if so do you have any milk, butter or cheese substitute recommendations? What brand and flavor of soy milk do you like? I had to give it up on Friday because Owen kept throwing up after feedings so our lactation consultant and pedi thought he was lactose intolerant which I guess he will grow out of in a couple months. So far he has stopped spitting up so I guess they were right but I'm struggling since most of our recipes call for one of those ingredients. So if anyone has any recommendations on any of those I would love to hear them!

Re: Is anyone here lactose free?

  • My DH likes Lactaid and Silk.  They can be a little $$ but I can usually find some decent coupons.  He also found some almond milk the other day that he liked, but not as much as the Silk/Lactaid.

  • I used to drink soy milk fairly regularly.  I liked the Soy Silk Very Vanilla and Chocolate flavors.  I have never tried the regular kind, but if you were going to have cereal or use it in recipes, I guess you'd have to use that kind since a flavored milk wouldn't work.

  • I was lactose free awhile ago.  I didn't eat cheese or butter.  For milk, I liked either vanilla rice or soy milk.  The regular soy milk alone (to drink) does not taste good to me.  I think the rice milk is a lighter flavor than soy.
  • Chase had a milk protein allergy so I was 100% dairy free for several months.

I preferred Rice Milk over Soy Milk.  Rice Dream is good.  Smart Balance makes a Vegan butter.. look for that one but make sure it says Vegan.

As for cheese.. I skipped it.  None of the fake ones were any good.  You can try goat cheese because sometimes it is a cows milk allergy and the goat cheese will not affect the baby.

  • Thanks! I will have to try those- I was just avoiding them all but breakfast options are limited without milk or butter lol.
  • Actually, I don't know if it safe for the baby, but I have been lactose intolerant for 15 years or more. I was taking lactaid pills to keep drinking milk. I think if I remember correctly, I could eat whatever I wanted on them. Again, you can check with your dr if they are safe or not.
DS has acid relux and milk protein allergy, and had torticollis, used to EP, now we FF . April siggy 3-6 month

  • I'm not, but most of my family is.  I'm allergic to soy, and don't care for rice milk.  I have had lactaid and it's pretty good.  I would probably go with that.

I've seen lactose free  butter, pudding, yogurt... just can't think of the name.

  • I'm dairy free as well.  Lactaid is the best tasting by far in my opinion for milk.  I really didn't like the taste of soy milk.  Thinking we'll give almond milk a try and see if that is any better.  We use Smart Balance as a butter substitute.

I think all cheese substitutes are gross.

Whole Foods is a great place to shop for this kind of stuff.

  • I drink Silk (the regular kind in the red carton.)  I like it for the most part, but here recently it has tasted sweeter than normal and I am not digging that.

I just want to point out that the Tofutti Cream Cheese and the Tofutti Sour Cream have the exact same ingredients in the exact same order.  Which made me think they wouldn't be that good.  But that was just my assumption.  I never tried either of them.  I just found that odd.

And I loved the soycream from Trader Joes.  AND DOUBLE STUF OREOS!  OMG.  Those are dairy free.  How did I forget that!?!?
