Babies on the Brain

Preppy

I saw in your last post that you've still been running throughout your pregnancy. Can you tell me what its like? Is it hard for you to run now with a belly? Were you real athletic and active before getting pregnant?

I think I'm in better shape physically than I ever have been before, even though I still have some weight to lose because I'm working out regularly now and never had before. I want to continue to run/workout for as long as I can when/if I get pregnant again to hopefully avoid gaining 60lbs and going through a lot of the health problems I had while pregnant.

Any insight into if this will be possible would be great!

Re: Preppy

  • I was a marathon runner prior to pregnancy, so yes, I was running upwards of 70 miles a week.

However, running during pregnancy has been really easy so far.  I am running less than 5 miles at a time 6 days a week.  Then I am going for walks in the afternoon that equal another 2-3 miles {just with the dog}.

I'm really not *that* big yet, so I am still pretty comfortable.  I'm planning to transition to the elliptical {from running outside} in about 6 weeks {or when I feel I have to} which is what my doctor and I agreed was probably best.

My only advice is to listen to your body.  I get tired faster, and I went from about a 6:30 mile to a 7:30 mile at this point.  I'm not training for races any more, so I am really just doing it out of habit at this point.  If I am exceptionally tired, I take a break to walk for a few minutes.

I know a lot of doctors make women stop running and switch to the elliptical or bike after the first trimester, but I told my doctor I didn't want to do that so we set some limits.  I ran a half-marathon when I was 9ish weeks pregnant, and I haven't done anything over 5 since.  That was our deal.

Just don't get upset if you are super tired.  I will tell you though, running is one of two things {the other being Zofran} that helps my m/s.  I'm still getting sick everyday, and running seems to fend it off at least for a few hours.

Hope that helps.  Let me know if you have more questions!

  • Thanks! I am nowhere near being a marathon runner, and I really dont expect to be, especially if I were to get pregnant! I'm currently training for a 5k, which is nothing to you....but a big deal to me! Haha.

I will try to keep running as long as I can, and obviously check with my doctor when the time comes. I had BP problems so I'm not sure if that will affect anything that they allow me to do.

Oh, and did I miss the announcement of what baby prepster is? Or have you not had another U/S to find out?

  • I find out at 9:25 AM on THURSDAY!
  • Preppy, I have no clue how you run.  I have been feeling my ute bounce for weeks when I run, and I don't do it for exercise, just when I am trying to get somewhere in a hurry.  It is very uncomfortable.

I haven't had any issues yet.

I am sure the day is coming.
