I'm filling out an adoption application for a puppy and I'm nervous about some answers. I'd love to hear what some of you with dog experience think:
What do you consider to be normal dog/puppy behavior problems?
How would you housebreak the dog/puppy?
How would you correct the dog/puppy when there is a potty accident?
How would you encourage appropriate behavior and prevent inappropriate behavior?
How much do you think it costs, per year, to own a dog?
The entire application was 3 full pages, but these 5 questions make me nervous. I'd like to see what some of you say so I can try to make sure that I'm not expecting anything too far off the norm. Thanks.

Barking, occasional accidents while still a puppy, chewing.

Take it outside at least every hour during the day.

Stern "NO"

Thats a tough one.
How much do you think it costs, per year, to own a dog?
Around $800? Im not sure about this one.

Success with #1 after Femara + Trigger + IUI
1) Do you think they mean just things you'd expect? Accidents, chewing, begging, recall issues Or things that you'd let slide? Because none of those.
2) Crate training and consistency. Treat when dog goes outside appropriately. If the dog does not "go" while outside, bring in and crate. Repeat after 15-30 minutes. Crate when not home and at night.
3) If you catch a dog mid-accident, make a sharp noise to stop them and immediately take outside. Treat when they finish, or see 2) for crating, etc. If you don't catch the dog, you can't correct them. Just clean up thoroughly with enzymatic cleaner and pay better attention in the future.
4) Treats and praise to encourage good behavior consistently. Use "Nothing in life is free" training to make dog work for treats, attention, food, entry into the house, etc.
5) Hm. How big a dog? I think we're at about $500 for three. I'd say $300 for one?

Nipping (puppies only), chewing, barking, accidents
How would you housebreak the dog/puppy?
If you've said that someone will be home all day, then you can indicate letting them out every hour and rewarding the appropriate behaviour. If you have said that the dog/puppy will be alone for parts of the day, then you might want to get into crate training here, as a precursor to house breaking.
How would you correct the dog/puppy when there is a potty accident?
Calm, verbal correction, but only if they are caught in the act. Otherwise, correction is not appropriate.
How would you encourage appropriate behavior and prevent inappropriate behavior?
Reward system.
How much do you think it costs, per year, to own a dog?
It would probably be safer to go on the higher side. I would put $1,000 to be safe.

continuously watch the puppy so it can be corrected before it has a chance to finish going to the bathroom, use a stern "no" and immediately take them outside.

between vet bills, shots, food, toys, treats, flea and heartworm medicine...probably around $600-800 a year

How would you housebreak the dog/puppy? Lettinng them out at least 1 every 2 hours and watch for their behavior when they try to go.

How would you correct the dog/puppy when there is a potty accident? A stern "NO" and bring them outside to show them where a "good dog" goes potty
How would you encourage appropriate behavior and prevent inappropriate behavior? Stern "NO" reminders for inappropriate. Showing of appropriate with generous treats for positive reinforcement

How would you correct the dog/puppy when there is a potty accident? Bring puppy to accident, verbalize with a stern "no" and show to puppy to the appropriate place to go potty.
How would you encourage appropriate behavior and prevent inappropriate behavior? Encourage: In a very friendly/loving tone, say good girl/boy while praising puppy with gentle petting. Prevent: Crate training, when unacceptable behavior is displayed, immediately correct.
How much do you think it costs, per year, to own a dog? Depends on breed (grooming, etc.) but about $500-$1100/year.
Oh, I "love" the questions on these apps ! ( sense the sarcasm!)
1) Barking, Chewing, housebreaking accidents
2) I would make sure I went home during lunch every day to take it out, as puppies cannot be expected to hold it for that long. When I'm home ( at night/weekend) I would take it out every hour ( or 30 minutes if a puppy). If it went to the bathroom, I would praise it and give it a treat. I also put a bell on a long cord and hung it on the door. I trained my dogs to hit it when they needed to go out ( which eventually became them just growling by the door to go out). I did this by taking their paw and hitting the bell each and every time we went outside ( then praising them when they "hit" it) If they actually went to the bathroom outside, they would immediately get a treat.
3) With dogs, you can't rub their noses in their accident. Also, you have to catch them in the act otherwise they will not know why you are mad. Anytime I see them having an accident, I immediately say "No!", pick them up, and bring them outside to finish.
4) I would encourage/prevent behavior by taking them to a training class ( even if just at Petsmart/Petco). Also, good behavior = treats.
5) Cost depends on the age. Puppies can cost a heck of a lot more as they need more of their initial shots. It's better to put a high amount on this so that they know that you know dogs are not cheap. I would say between $500- $1K a year ( vet bills, food, toys, etc) depending on the age.
