Not because anyone is stupid, but if you're not used to a ton of snow, you may not think of it.
-- Dig out your heat pump, dryer vents, and your grill (In case you need it to cook something in an emergency. My husband's personal emergency was wings for the Super Bowl.)
-- Do you know where all of your shovels and salt bags are?
-- Put up the windshield wipers on the cars so that they don't get frozen to the glass. You might also want to put a towel or tarp over the front so that snow removal is easier.
-- Make sure that you have enough diapers/wipes/formula/wine. It may be a couple of days before you get out.
-- Charge your cell phones in case you lose power.
Re: Safety check before the snow comes:
candles/lighters/matches
if the power goes out, put the food in the snow ;-)
and stock up on snacks that don't need to be cooked
LOL this. It is eye-opening to read all the snow posts!
And for the safety of the others on the road: if you do drive after the storm, CLEAR OFF THE ROOF OF YOUR CAR/TRUCK/VAN!!
I've had two windshields broken, one shattered in my face at 50 mph by flying blocks of snow/ice off the cars of others!
I love how you slipped the wine in there
I've got a lot to learn if we ever (finally) move north!
It really doesn't snow much here, which is why this is so insane.
Lat year we had a total of about 12 inches of snow all season.

I think this blog post by WUSA9's Topper Shutt says it best:

I however live in snow hell. If you decide to move, avoid anywhere that is familiar with the phrase "lake effect snow".
this happened to us too - luckily, the sheet of ice/snow busted the grill of our suv and not our windshield.

Don't bring outdoor cooking implements indoors-- people die from doing that, too.

For serious! Why people think it's safe to use a gas/charcoal grill INDOORS in beyond me. Common sense, people!
This happened to my sister. I also don't get how people get out and drive without scraping their windows. How do they see?
