Toddlers: 24 Months+

How much is/was your 2 year old talking??

How much is your 2 year talking-- niece was 2 in October-- says 10-15 words.  Her pedi recommended she get a hearing test done and now SIL and BIL are saying she doesn't need it because she is talking more-- I just thought that a 2 year old (really almost 2.5) would be saying more than 10-15 words... and let me add those 10-15 words don't really sound like words, but you can tell what she is trying to say.  I am just worried they aren't doing what is best.

  • Dd talks in full sentences most of the time, that being said I  understand her 90% of the time but others usually look at me like I'm nuts. Toddler speak isn't really english. Also, I know several kids who didn't talk until 3ish and are totally normal.

  • I was a nanny, and dealt with the toddler language-- I guess I am just expecting her to be talking more-- and it worriies me that even her pedi saw a problem, and they still aren't doing anything.
  • Both of my boys are in EI b/c they aren't talking enough.  Sam says about 20 and Max says about 10.

  • If she had a language burst, her parents are probably thinking she is okay.  While you (and a lot of us) would have her tested any way, there really isn't much you can do if her parents aren't behind it.  I'm sure her pediatrician will stay on top of it and may be able to encourage them.

  • Kellen talks in full sentences.  We understand him 99% of the time and other people understand him about 95%.

  • My daughter's a crazy talker so probably isn't a good one to measure against.  However, I should say that if her doctor recommended seeing a specialist, I'd do it.
  • At 2, DD was talking in full sentences and had a pretty extensive vocabulary.
  • Ben stops non-stop and has a huge vocabulary.  He didn't really say just words..he waited until he was a little older to start talking a lot, but when he started he was talking in full sentences.  He says sentences of 10-12 words now.

  • DD is a yakker and probably says 150+ words. However, on the developmental milestones chart we got at the ped., it says by age 3 they should be saying only at least 50 words.

If the ped. was concerned, I'd definitely get it checked out...but unfortunately, it's their kid and they can do what they want. Sometimes it's hard to accept that there may be a problem....

  • At her two year check-up, our ped said she was talking better than most of his three year olds.  She has always had a great vocab.  Just for giggles DH and I sat down at her second birthday and figured up over 70 words she knew.  She is speaking in 7+ word sentences. She will be 3 in Aug.

  • DD probably says 150+ words.  At her 2 year check up, the pedi asked if she was saying at least 50 words.  I would be concerned if she was only saying 10-15 words.  Some kids are just late talkers and will catch up, but others need some additional help.

  • I think it is really different for each kid.  My DS was speaking in complete sentence with a vocabulary that even scared my by age 2.  However two little boys he plays with, within 3 weeks of age of him,  are very different.  1 only seems to say OK and the other has a much larger vocabulary but is very hard to understand.  If they are offering a test, I'd take it.  What can it hurt?  There might even be a benefit.  Good Luck.

  • DS was 2 in December--he is super verbal, seems to be more so than other 2 year olds. they're all different, but if her pedi expressed concern I would hope the parents would take their recommendation seriously. if there is a hearing issue, it is ciritcal that it be addressed early.
  • The range of how much 2 year talks, is all over when I looked around. My DS at the age of 2 did not even had 10 actual words. Around his 18 months aptt pedi was not concerned when he had 4-5 words. He still said if I am worried we can get him evaluated thru EI. Then I suddenly thought thats something I dont need, he is alright....He is all fine and stopped worrying about it all together. It was the worst decision in  my life. At 24 months, right after his birthday, finally I got him evaluated via private SLP. He was at the age of 9 months for language. Suddenly, everything was so upside down. Initially we cried but then we started his private therapy and EI. Things improved. He is 2.6 months now. He knows almost everything around. But he is still way behind. He talks in one words or two words max. He has a good vocab but no sentences. My point here is earlier you start the more time you have to be on track. If they even get her evaluated, the will get the actual status. Now we see Neurologist and EI. I stopped his private therapy as for 5 months we took him 5 days a week. Now he goes in daycare everyday for half day. I can strongly feel the denial from her family. Its just we see our kid everyday and we see the progress everyday, we get into denial phase. Best you can do right now is push them for free evaluation via EI. The little girl is so lucky to have you as a family. I wish someone was there for my DS when I was so ignoring his frustration. Good luck.

My DD too. There would be no way to count how many words she has.

  • My DD who is 26 months says 12 words we can understand, but strangers may only understand 75% of them.  She has been receiving speech therapy since she was 21 months old.  Her hearing is fine, she understands what we say, but she can express herself.

My DS is 22 months old says 10 words, and maybe 50% are intelligible to strangers.  We will likely have him evaluated for speech delay, but he continues to try new sounds, new words, and is making forward progress.  Something our DD never did.

My DH kept putting the call off to EI...it was like we were admitting failure as parents.  It was tough to swallow that there was something 'wrong', but we are so glad we went through with everything.  Just keep reminding your SIL and BIL that it's not their fault and it's not a 'bad' thing to get therapy.  Their pedi will probably bring it up to them again.

  • About a week before DS's 2nd birthday I started a list of all his words.  I got to 169.  He was talking in 3 or 4 word sentences.

We're now a week from DD's 2nd birthday & I just started her list today & I already know she has far less than 169, but I feel like her sentence structure is better.

All kids are different, especially at 2 years old.  But if the pedi is saying a hearing test is in order, you get it done.

  • My DS started putting sentences together by the time he was 2.5, but it did take him awhile to talk
  • DS just turned 2 and he is talking in sentences.  He talks constantly and says everything.  We understand everything he says.  People who aren't around him all of the time probably understand half of what he says.
