Anyone use Zofran?

I think I'm sick of feeling so awful everyday and hardly being able to eat and then throwing up 1 or 2 times per day on top of that.  My Dr. had be try the vitamin B6/Unisom, but I don't notice any difference.

Has anyone used Zofran?  Did it work for you?  Any side effects?  I guess my fear is it won't make any difference either.  I'm just trying to tell myself that hopefully there is only 1 more month (or less) left of feeling like this!

 Thanks :)

Re: Anyone use Zofran?

  • I never tried Zofran, but the phenergen was a miracle worker.

I hate to be mean, but it's probably going to last longer than a month.  I believe it's true that symptoms with twins hit harder and last longer - I was sick until week 15.  There are some on here who've been sick the whole time.

    Get the drugs!

  • Zofran will work.  It was like a wonder drug for my singleton pregnancy.  It made a small dent (enough so that I wasn't constantly puking) with my triplet pregnancy.  Nothing else worked for me either.  I needed Zofran daily w/ both pregnancies until 20 weeks or so.

I think the only side effect that I can recall reading was that it may constipate but being pregnant constipates as well.

  • I used Zofran as well. I didn't notice any side effects and I felt like it helped. I'd give it a try if I were you and your doctor says its alright.
  • I used Zofran and it really worked!  I wasn't "allowed" to throw up because I had a brand new vertical incision from surgery and it would have ripped it open.  The Zofran helped a ton and even though sometimes I felt a little icky I didn't throw up a single time!! Take it!
  • It took the edge off for me. I wouldn't say I had a huge appetite but at least I was able to eat something. The only side effect I had was constipation so I took stool softeners. I took it from week 9 to about week 16/17.
  • Major Kudos to you for sticking it out until 10 weeks - I'm impressed! I caved at 6 weeks - right after we found out it was twins. I was so nauseous and literally could not take another day of feeling that terrible! I never actually got sick during those early weeks but felt sicker than a dog 24/7. My doctor finally got my on the Zofran and it seemed to help take the edge off at least, but I never felt 100% 'great'. Weeks 8-10 were by far the worst for me - even while on Zofran I was dry-heaving and gagging nearly every day (but still never threw up!) Anyway, it may let up for you soon - around 11 weeks I was feeling semi-decent, but if you aren't getting any relief or it is affecting how much you eat then I'd suggest having your doctor call in a script for you..

  • I took Zofran with this pregnancy.  I was in terrible shape before Zofran (basically couldn't lift my head up from a laying down position without throwing up) and with Zofran I was throwing up like 10 times/day.  Now that I'm further along, I still need the Zofran- if I miss a dose or am late taking it, I throw up, but I'm not throwing up every day now, more like 10 times/week.

I think I heard it can make you tired- I was tired from being so sick and pregnant so hard to say how Zofran factored in.

  • I was on Zofran from w6 through the end of my PG. I had to take it via IV/PICC though from 6w through 24w. It made me feel less nausiated, but I was still throwing up 10-15 times daily. I had HEG though and no medicine was going to be able to stop it.

  • I didn't like taking Zofran - it didn't make me stop throwing up, it really upset my stomach, and it completely knocked me out.     I've been taking Reglan instead, and it works better for me.   And hang in there - I'm at week 13 and feeling much much better.   I still need to take the Reglan once or twice a day, but if I don't I just feel queasy and I don't barf anymore.

     Hope you feel better soon.

  • Zofran was an absolute God send!  It worked really well for me, when nothing else did, and it worked fast.  The only side effect I noticed was really bad constipation.  If you decide to get it, just do yourself a favor and take a dose of Miralax at bedtime every night to head off a problem before it starts.  GL, hope it works for you and you start feeling better soon!

P.S. Ask for the kind that you just dissolve on your tongue.  I started on the regular pills that you swallow and threw them up whole, yet partially dissolved.  Then I had the problem of knowing if I could try to take another or not.  I didn't have a problem at all with the dissolvable - they tasted like orange tic tacs.

  • Thanks for all the replies!  I think I'll give the office a call and try to get in later this week.

I figure this may be the case - I am just trying to be optimistic!
