Recommendation/Reference Letter question

So, I am trying to find a full time job. I was thinking of asking my old boss to write a letter for me, I left the job on good terms, I was leaving to stay home with the kids. My question is, should I ask my old immediate supervisor or should I ask the supervisor I had prior to him that is now a VP? Same job, my most recent supervisor came on board when my prior supervisor got promoted. I'm wondering if a letter from a person in a higher position would be better or if it doesn't matter.
