3rd Trimester

Turns out I'm Anemic...Anyone else??

Apparently when I did my blood work for the GH my levels came back as Anemic. I'm kinda annoyed that I'm just finding out now as they didn't tell me at my appt. two weeks ago?!?

Annnnnyway, stopped and got my iron supplements. Kinda worried from what I hear that this is going to make me even more constipated than I already have been.... Indifferent

Anyone else here anemic? Anything I should know about it?

Thanks!!

  • Yeah, my iron levels were low from my GD test too. What supplement did you get? I'm taking Floradix (liquid) and it hasn't messed with my digestion at all.

  • yes i am and it is very common.  i had problems with constipation and he recommended Colace up to 2x a day.  I take 1 pill of Slow FE and 1 pill of Colace a day (along with leafy greens/apples in diet) and i am good to go.  good luck!
  • I am!  Make sure you take the supplements with vitamin c and not milk or tea.  I'm sure they told you that already, but it's helpful.  Also, my doctor recommended Peri-Colace (in the green box) to help with the constipation since iron does tend to stop you up.  Other than that, I've just been reading the labels of EVERYTHING to make sure I'm getting the most iron I can. I do not want it to be an issue during labor.

  • Me too! I started out the pregnancy a little anemic and now I am severly anemic.  Iron supplements can make you nauseous.  I've been having "morning sickness" all day again, even if I take iron with food.

  • Yep I'm anemic too. I've been taking SlowFE for about 3 weeks now. I was worried about the constipation too but it actually has the opposite effect on me. I'm finally able to go and go pretty regular. I usually take it between breakfast and lunch and it has not upset my stomach. Good luck!

  • Yes, I just found out at about 31 weeks that I am anemic as well. My OB didn't seem too concerned about it though. She didn't suggest any change in diet or anything. She just prescribed me an iron supplement and reccomended that I take it a few hours before or after my prenatal. Something about the body not being able to process too much iron at once. I don't know, but I take the iron pill with breakfast or lunch and the prenatal before bed. Oh and I haven't had any constipation or any problems at all since I've been taking them. Hope that helps.
  • At least you found out at 31wks, I didn't find out till last week at my 37wk appt. I am taking feosol and it hasn't been a problem at all. Apparently, all of my blood work has been coming back within the normal range but on the lower side but finally dipped below the last time they did blood work. Iron pills have helped a ton though. If my levels don't go up fast enough, my Dr. said I will have to get an IV with an iron supplement (I think) during labor if not sometime over the next week.

It's really important to take your supplements because if your levels are too low when you give birth you could end up with more bleeding, or possibly hemorrhage.  The best thing you can do to make sure it's absorbed well is to take it on an empty stomach with a glass of orange juice.  Vitamin C helps make the iron easier for your body to absorb.

  • Mine was low too. I am taking Ferrous Gluconate, and have had no trouble with constipation.

  • Yeah, my levels were 1 pt below normal when I did the GD test.  My OBs office sent me a letter, which I of course lost....I know I need to be taking something but I'm not sure what...I guess I'll ask tomorrow.
  • I too am anemic and found out with my GD test.  I also take the SlowFE supplements. I take my at night before bed along with my prenatal and a stool softener.  This has seemed to work great for me, as I have not had any problems with it messin' with my system...I go 2-3 times daily (sorry TMI).

  • I just found our today that I am also anemic. I was with DS as well, so it wasn;t really a surprise. I am headed out to the pharmacy momentarily to grad some supplements. I was told to take it twice a day....anyone else??

I was only slightly anemic too, but my OB said that levels drop so significantly when you give birth that she was recommending the suppliment to avoid me becoming severely anemic then.

  • I found out I was anemic at 26 weeks.... And I have been taking an iron supplement with a vit c supplement.... And they retested me at week 28 and I was good ..... My prenatals have stool softener in them so I was doing ok... They retested me last week and I am anemic again ... So now I'm taking two iron pills a day with the vit c... I haven't been too constipated yet... But I have colace in case it becomes an issue...

  • I found out I'm anemic also.  They just told me to take a iron supplement and that's about it.  I've been taking Flintstones so I switched to Flintstones w/ Iron and it's actually helping me become more regular, surprisingly!  I'm so happy about it.  I go #2 now almost every day or every other day which is really good for me!
