Babies: 3 - 6 Months

BFing Oct mamas

Since flu season will be here when our LOs turn a year old do you plan on extending BFing?

I talked to Henry's pedi about it today and he highly recommended it.  I was planning on BFing twice a day after a year, but I think I may try to do it more often so he can have the max protection.

He also said Henry should get the flu shot in April even though flu season should be over.

Re: BFing Oct mamas

  • I just plan on getting through this flu season first. I'd like to make it to 9 months, like I did for DD1. I don't have anything against extended BF and if we make it to that point and can still continue, then great.. but I just don't think I'll make it to that point! :)

  •   I doubt it.  My goal is 9-12 months.  Once she gets teeth, I have a feeling I will be more of an EP'er (I work 4 days a week, so she gets lots of EBM bottles).  We'll see how it goes though.  I don't have a problem with people doing it, but I don't think it's for me.  I will be really happy when I don't have to pump at work anymore!

ETA-- I may try to build up a freezer stash.  If I do, I'll feed her from that until it's gone.

  • I just trying to get to 6 months.  Beside we just got hit with the flu despite getting vaccinated.
  • My pediatrician hasn't mentioned it to me, but I don't think I'll have Callum get the flu shot this year.  As for extending breastfeeding, you bring up a good point so I might consider it if things are still going well.  I've been back at work since the beginning of the year and my supply is holding up ok, but I know that can change pretty quickly.   If I'm still doing ok though, I may just do it even though I had originally planned to stop at a year (assuming I made it that far).
  • I'm a Sept mommy but really hope to still be BFing next fall. I hadn't even thought about the fact that he's turning a year right at flu season.

  • Not sure yet (I'm an Aug mama though). I will definitely not be pumping after a year, but I may nurse morning/night as long as she's interested and my supply is up. DD1 weaned naturally at a year so if that happens, so be it!

  • I'm shooting for a full year of BFing, but I don't know if I will go beyond that...Pedi hasn't mentioned the flu shot for D, either.
  • I'm planning on BFing for at least a year, not sure if I'll go beyond that.
  • I am thinking we will try to BF till around 18 months....but we will see how it goes. Who know if she will even want to BF still?

  • I haven't even thought about it. I don't think I plan on extended breastfeeding, but I may consider pumping and giving his bottles at that point in time. I hadn't thught about flu season, I'm just taking it one month at a time:)

This. I really want to make it to at least next january, but longer would be great!

  • Wow, I hadn't even thought of that. Kudos to your pedi for foresight.

I don't know whether I'll make it past a year. If I can make it till October I'll be very happy. I'm adding to my freezer stash daily, so if that keeps up, I'll be able to continue giving him breastmilk after I've stopped nursing.

  • I never really thought about that. I was hoping to BF until she is a year old, so I will gladly keep it up an extra couple of months if it helps protect her from the flu!

  • My son was 9/30 but I'd still like to play.  :)  Yes, I would like to continue some degree of nursing past 1 year.  However, given my recent supply issues, I will just have to hope I can keep up with him over the next few months!  We'll see, but yes, that would be ideal.
  • I hadn't really thought about that.  I'm hoping to make it to 9-12 months...not really sure if I plan/want to go past 12 months.  We'll see.
  • I'm going to try to go as long as I can EBF LO, esp given she's a preemie. Plus, we're going to start TTC this summer/early fall, so part of me feels like if I can I might as well go right on through KWIM?
  • Technically I'm a Sept Mom, DD was born on the 29th, but you do bring up an interesting point. I was planning on BFing until DD is a year old anyway, providing everything goes well of course. Since I will be back to work next fall, I might just continue to feed her pumped BM after that. That way she's still getting some, but since I'll be back at work I won't be nursing. We'll probably get her a flu shot also, my pedi mentioned getting DD one at her 6 month appt even though flu season will be over by then too.
