Will I be all alone?

DH and I are thinking of buying land down near Olympia, either Shelton or south of Olympia. We want a homestead, and DH's grandma isn't getting any younger and we want to be there for her.

However, I am nervous about moving so far from all the people I know. Does anyone else live down that way? Do you like the area?

Re: Will I be all alone?

  • I like it there, mostly.  We live in Tacoma, with family in Eatonville area, and i went to school for a while at Evergreen.  I don't like Lacey because there is way too much traffic and the ratio of rude to non-rude people is too high.  Everywhere else in that area seems fine, though.

I forgot to say: When we moved to Tacoma we learned that we live "too far away" and people don't want to visit... yet we are expected to visit them (the same distance away, btw)... (and no, i'm not bitter!).  So that may be a problem for you, too.

  • We live in Dupont. So we're really close to Lacey. When going to run errands, we definitely prefer to head south towards Lacey/Olympia rather than Tacoma.

I've never been to Shelton, but DH has and he despises it for some reaon (gotta ask him why..)

Shelton is kind of a pit.  There isn't much to do there and you have to drive quite a ways to find anything decent in the way of restaurants.

One of my commuting buddies (who lived in Shelton) used to say the favorite past-time in Shelton was getting a dipped cone at the Dairy Queen and watching the clothes go round and round and round in the washing machines at the laundromat across the street.  I think he was kidding.  I'm not sure though.

  • I live in North Lacey, and hardly ever travel into Olympia, except to go to the Children's Museum or the Farmers Market. I'm not a big shopper so going to the "Westide" is almost unheard of for me. That is were the mall is. I go to Puyallup (that is where all the IL's are) far too often to think about heading any more south.

We love where we are right now. We did look at houses on Steamboat Island, but didn't get the one house we really wanted. It was a blessing, because I would have been "stuck" out there far more then I would like. You would have to go into Olympia to get groceries and other supplies.

There are good things. We can easily go to the Big City (Seattle or Portland) on a day trip, or to the Beach (Ocean Shores/Westport) or the Mountains on a day trip. We love the outdoors, so we really like this option.

I don't know what else to tell you, because it really depends on your lifestyle as to whether or not you will really like it.

  • Thanks for all the respsonses!

I'd love to hear any horror stories about Shelton--we picked it because his grandma's house is right between Elma and Shelton.
