Adoption Cost Breakdown

I've been exchanging e-mails with the adoption agency about the twins jacksjersey girl posted earlier.  We don't have a home study, but I wanted to find out some additional information about the situation.

The adoption fees were much higher than I anticipated ($52k).  I'm sure some of the increased costs are due to it being twins, but I was still surprised.  The breakdown costs were surprising as well.

Has anyone adopted twins and can speak to the cost?  Is it normally twice as much?  Or does anyone know the approximate breakdown for adoption costs?

Keep in mind FL permits payment of birthmother expenses, which are included in this estimate.  That number was higher than I anticipated as well, although maybe I'm wrong in my assumptions.

Re: Adoption Cost Breakdown

  • I think $52K does seem a little high, but I would imagine that the legal portion alone would be double.  Two babies = two adoptions, no?  Two TPRs, two adoption decrees, etc.  I know folks who have spent $40K for adoption of one child.

The babies weren't due until June, right?  So that's at least 4 months of full BM expenses.  I would think rent, food, etc., could be at least $2K per month, if not more.  Also, does that include medical?  I would imagine the medical is more, too.  Plus, if she works now, but has to go on bedrest for the twin pregnancy, would that mean more support?

I would think the homestudy would be no more than $3-4K.  Agency placement fees could be $3-4K per child, easily, then another few thousand per child for post-placement services.

An interesting situation, for sure.  Lots of questions to ask. . .

2 years TTC with 5 losses, 1 year recovering, 6 months applying for adoption approval, and almost a year waiting for a placement. Then, a miracle BFP at age 36!

  • That seems high in general, but not high for twins with American Adoptions.  What race are the babies?  I ask because the agency fees are significantly higher for non AA or bi-racial AA babies.  If these twins are not AA or BR, then 52k does not surprise me, unfortunately.

  • Our agency has an additional $2K in fees above a single adoption when twin adoption is involved. That's to cover additional legal fees to process for one baby instead of 2.

Fees are not doubled because of twins.

This is just my experience with an agency that does not operate in FL.

  • Wow. That seems high. We haven't talked costs but said we'd consider twins. And they didn't mention additional costs.
