Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Road trip with DD...advice?

DD will be 6 months in April...when we take a 7-8 hour (drive time) road trip to see my fam.

She does OK in her car seat when driving around town.  But what should I expect when we take a long trip?

I realize we'll have to stop for me to feed her a few times.  But I keep thinking that when I go to put her back in the seat she's going to mad.  Won't she get tired of sitting restrained in that seat for a long time?

Anyone have stories or advice for road trips with 6 mo old?

Re: Road trip with DD...advice?

  • We did a 12 hour trip for Christmas to see family. Best advice is to start as early as you can. We left at 3am and DD was asleep for hours. It helped a lot. Also eith me or DH would take turns sitting in the back with her and playing. Bring a lot of toys and break a new one out after a few hours. Also I don't know if your BF or FF but if you are BF bring a bottle or two if you can pump. You'd be surprised as to how cranky a kid can get in a short amount of time. It helped to have a cooler of some pumped bottles to tide her over until we could get to an exit and I could feed her. Good luck!

  • We do 4-5 hr trips to see my parents all the time, so I can give some advice. If you FF, get one of these divided containers (https://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Powdered-Formula-Dispenser-Colors/dp/B000RFCXIK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1265656567&sr=8-4 )  which carry 3 - 8oz sections of formula powder that you measure in advance. Easy to pour and mix with room temp bottles of water in the car. Or buy the premade individual cans you can just pour and feed.Bring a bag of things like books, small animals and stuff you can sit in the back seat and play with her. Peek-a-boo with stuffed toys is always a big time killer for us. Trade off with DH so she gets to see someone else. Stop every 3 or 4 hrs and take her out of the seat, stretch, change, eat. Even if it's only for 5 minutes. Most likely she'll probably sleep through a lot of it. My kids always do. Good luck!
