Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Did you baptize (or will you)

Ok, so dh and I have totally slacked off and haven't gone to church in a really long time.  We moved two years ago and things have been crazy busy since then.   We still belong to the church and would like to have dd baptized--but I'm too embarrassed to call the pastor!

Did anyone baptize their LO even though they hadn't been to church in a long time?

Re: Did you baptize (or will you)

  • We did not, and will not. At our church we believe that baptism is done to remove sin, and a baby can't sin. So once he reaches the decision on his own, then he can be baptized. :)

  • Aww, we went on Christmas Eve and about a month ago (only time since LO's birth), and she's getting baptized Sunday!  Don't be embarrassed.  Everyone understands our new situations!
  • My BIL hasn't been to church in a very long time and the rest of the family goes quite often but he decided he wanted to have their dd baptized and he called the pastor and met with him & it was no problem.

Don't be shy, just call. Or you could go to a few services and then ask and just be like "of course, as you know, I am a member seeing as I come quite often." He won't even notice your absence for several years ;)

  • we have a simliar dilemma. we probably show up to church once every 2 months but really want him to be baptized. we were gonna go yesterday but the blizzard kept us in. maybe next sunday...
  • Oh yes, the church had no problem with it.  They would rather baptize the baby than have LO not baptized.  I am Catholic and DH doesn't practice anything...so it was all up to me.  I wanted DS baptized so I had no prob with it even though I hadn't ever gone to our new church!

  • We want to get DD baptized, but not sure when.... we have been attending a church semi-regularly over the past year but haven't joined yet, so I think I want to officially join first, but I idk... we'll see!
  • I've never heard of a church saying "no" just b/c the parents haven't been in forever. Just call!
  • I'm sort of in the same boat.  We haven't been to church much since we were married which was November '08.  We want to get DD baptized and definitely will, but I feel like we need to attend a few masses before we ask.

Considering how absent we've been, they likely don't even know we had a baby.

This exactly.  DH doesn't practice anything, but I wanted DD baptized Catholic.  I just called up and they never really asked me any questions about my church going status.  We just had to take the baptism class like everyone else.

This.  We have only been for funerals in the last couple of years.  The church built a new church and got a new pastor so I felt really awkward.  I e-mailed the new pastor and asked about getting LO baptized.  He was very warm and welcoming.  We are getting her's done on Feb 28.

  • We go, but not that often. We baptized DS a couple months ago.

  • We had DS baptized in December and had only been to mass once since we were married

  • DH is a pastor and just met with a couple last week who want their LO baptized but haven't been to church in quite some time.  It happens fairly often.  Of course he'd love to see them come back more regularly and he always talks to them about the fact that in our faith, baptism includes the parents making promises to raise the child in the church.  But he understands that sometimes it's tough to stay in the habit of going every Sundays.

As others said, go ahead and call.   I'm sure the pastor will understand!
