Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Doesn't want to go to sleep all of a sudden?

Usually I start feeding and putting DD down at 7:30 and she's down by 8:30.  But the last two nights (Sat & Sun) have been very strange.  I'll be nursing her for a while and she looks like she is totally falling asleep.  Then, all of a sudden, she pulls off, stares at me, and then starts smiling and cooing.  (Which is so freaking cute, btw.)  And then she's just absolutely bug eyed.  It's not like she's tired and I can rock her a bit...she is completely awake and ready to party.  We have to let her play for about an hour and then she's ready to pass out.  We've ended up laying her down between 10-10:30...very late for her.

I don't understand why she is doing this all of a sudden.  It's possible it could be a growth spurt, but she doesn't seem like she's nursing more.  And she doesn't seem more irritable.

One thing that has been different...

She started the home day care recently and had to start being woke up at 6am.  The first weekend, she didn't get to sleep in b/c she woke herself up around 6 b/c of a wardrobe malfunction and gas.

This weekend was the first time in two weeks that got to sleep in.  I wonder if the additional 1.5-2 hours in the morning caused her schedule to shift?  If that's the case, is this what I have to look forward to every Saturday and Sunday?

Anyone have similar experiences?

  • We're going through the same thing. I'll feed Zack at his usual bedtime, around 6:30, and instead of falling asleep at the end like he always has, he's wide awake and looking around. The first time it happened it was three hours before he finally fell asleep -- it was brutal.

We haven't had any major changes in our routine, so I'm thinking it's a developmental change. He's starting to pay a lot more attention to his surroundings and that's carrying over to the night.

Rather than encouraging this behavior by playing or talking with him, I've been keeping quiet and rocking him. The time it takes him to fall asleep has been getting shorter, so I think it's working.

  • The same thing has been happening with Noah for the past couple of weeks.  He was all drowsy and almost asleep in his swing last night and then he had a meltdown randomly.  So I picked him up and thought I'd try his crib but then he decided that he was ready to party.  Sooo... he stayed awake until it was time for him to eat again, lol.  I think he finally fell asleep after that bottle but it really has been a battle getting him to sleep when we KNOW he's tired.  He just wants to fight it now!  All I can do is keep him happy, haha.
