I registered for a whole travel system, AND a dresser, AND since my friends backed out, I will be doing most of the planning for my shower along with....MY MOM! For shame!!
I registered for all that baby gear too.I mean, its stuff the baby needs, right? How is that tacky?
Expect MIRACLES!!
Shocking surprise BFP 9/12/12
After 2 IUIs, 3 IVFs w/ICSI and 1 FET we have been blessed with a healthy baby girl born 26 August 2010!
I'm just as tacky, maybe even more so. I registered for a car seat that works for 5-40 lbs, a dresser, crib, breast pump, and nipple cream. Plus I am helping my sister with almost all the planning (she's not a good party planner) In my opinion if people don't want to buy it then they wont, if they do, yay for saving me some money!

I live half the country away from my fam so the only way for me to show them my nursery furniture is to put it on my registry. Plus, I get the completion discount once the baby is born.

Exactly melodylb, you never know. My best girlfriend said that instead of spending a few hundred planning my shower, she'd rather buy me a lot of gifts or a big-ticket gift. She wanted to buy my pump, but I found a free one, so now she will probably get our PNP or travel system. Some people want to buy a big gift. Not tacky!
Totally not tacky! I registered for the travel system and a crib. DH's family likes to pitch in and buy one large item together so I had to give them a few to choose from, right?
I guess I'm tacky too- I also registered for a travel system (which was the first item to go by the way- my mom gave it to me for my birthday) and convertible car seat. I don't understand what the big deal is. My nephew is 9 months old and already needs the convertible car seat, so I have no idea why people think that's tacky. You might need things sooner than you realize.
Wow! I can't believe what a hot button topic this is! Or how judgmental some people are.
A pp made the excellent point that everyone is in a different situation.
If putting an item on a registry now means that I can get it for a discount later, you can bet your sweet arse I'll put it on there. A registry is a wish list - not a demand notice, for Pete's sake!
i just posted on the other thread too but i dont think that it is tacky at all to register for the big stuff. sometimes a group of people will all chip in and are happy to get something big that they know you will get lots of use out of.
Quite frankly, it's your baby and your shower and your life, and there are WAY too many judgey b!tches on here anyway. Register for whatever you feel like!
I want to know where people are getting their "rules" for what to register for! I looked up Ms. Manner's opinions, but she only focused on who should throw the party and how the invitations should be worded.
Personally, I think a camera is great for a registry, because I know my parents or inlaws want to see lots of baby pics! Hell, I was even thinking of putting some sports bras on my registry since my normal ones don't fit and won't fit while I'm breastfeeding. When I look at someone else's registry, I don't really judge if they "need" it or not...that's not point of giving a gift!
Really, if someone wants to put SAT prep books for their baby on the registry, more power to them, at least they are thinking ahead!

I think it's tacky to judge people for that. No one knows a family dynamic or the reasoning behind something.
Even registering for a camera, maybe her mom or grandma said we want to buy you a camera put the one you want on your registry. You never know.
