Alimentum or Soy??

DS is 5 weeks old and I took him to pedi last Monday because he had mucus with a little bit of blood in his dirty diaper.  Pedi said it is mosty likely a milk protein allergy and put him on Alimentum.  I'm wondering why we can't try soy?  I plan to ask pedi when we go in for 8 week shots.  Does anyone here have experience with a milk protein allergy and soy?

Thanks,

Randi

  • I think you should trust your pedi

  • DS has a milk protein allergy, and often times the milk protein found in soy milk (as well as with cow's milk) will irritate the allergy.  At least that's why we were advised to not use soy.

    HTH and GL!

FWIW--we use Nutramigen and it's a bit less expensive than Alimentum (the cheapest we found was $21 a can at Target--plus Target will sometime give you coupons for $10 off 2 cans).

  • I gave my son soy formula a few times, he also has a milk protein allergy. It was AWFUL on him, it made him so gassy, it literally broke my heart to see him in so much pain. Now we EBF and I just cut out all dairy. I would trust your pedi!!

  • Many babies who are dairy allergic are also soy. You could have tried soy, but chances are greater than not that you'd wind up switching it Alimentum anyway. It sucks, b/c it's so expensive, but is worth it for a healthy, happy baby.

  • We are using Soy.   I questioned the pediatrician on Friday about a soy alternative, and he said he thought that Alimentum has additives that are not desirable.   I questioned him because I was concerned about the pesticides and estrogenic effects of Soy.  Re: the pesticides, he felt that it is a valid concern and we are switching to organic.  Re: the estrogenic efffects he feels that long term, children have done well on it and have not had any negative effects.
  • DD has the milk protein allergy too. The reasoning is that about half of babies with the milk protein allergy also have a soy allergy, so trying soy first risks prolonging the painful symptoms for LO. It already takes weeks to clear the milk from their system, so if you switch to soy have to wait a few weeks, see no improvement and then realize you have to switch to a hypoallergenic formula like alimentum and then get the soy out of their system, LO has been feeling bad for an additional month or so.

I BF so I went dairy/soy free when DD was 6 weeks old. Around 4 mo, I realized I needed to supplement, so I was able to test soy by drinking a little soy milk myself and increasing the volume each day to see if it affected DD. It didn't and she is now supplemented heavily (my supply is almost gone!) with Similac Isomil. If you are FF and don't have this option, its best to go straight to alimentum and you could always ask the pedi later about adding a little soy in and then seeing if it effects LO. I know that alimentum is ridicidulously expensive. Some insurance does cover it though so it doesn't hurt to ask yours.

Also, I have a sample of Alimentum that is unopened and doesn't expire until March 2012. PM me if you want it and I'll send it to you. Its not much, but at that price every bit helps and I've been meaning to find a home for this can.
