Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Helmet to reshape head anyone??

My ped. told us that my girl twin may have to be evaluated for a helmet to help with her head shape. We turn her head all the time but she justs goes right back to sleeping on one particular side.

Anyone with words of wisdom? THanks!

  • I wish my mom would have put me in one because the whole back of my head is flat.  Luckily it's not the sides but my pontails always looked really strange as a kid.  I know they have the DOC bands that can correct the head shape pretty quickly in babies.  They are really cute too but I have no idea how much they cost.

  • Our LO has torticollis so she would only turn her head to the left.  We started doing neck stretches which helped but by then her head needed a DOC band.

Keep trying repositioning techniques and tummy time, and ask your ped about the neck stretches if necessary.

The same thing happened with one of my girls.  She has been in her helmet for 3 weeks now and it is already looking better.  Go get it checked out now.  The earlier they catch it the better it will be for your LO.

  • DS has torticollis too, but a helmet hasn't been mentioned yet.  He does have a flat spot, but he's been in weekly physical therapy since he was 2 months old.  They say he'll be in PT until he's 1.

The DD of a friend of mine was put in helmet and didn't have any PT.  That confuses me.... I would ask your pedi about the option of PT.

  • My little one was born with a really flat head. They told me it was due to her being stuck in my uterus. I have heard that it is common in twins due to the tight space for 2 babies in the uterus. Our pedi mentioned it at her 2 month appointment. She said to watch it, alternate her head when she sleeps and do tons of tummy time. She said if things didn't show improvement by her 4 month appointment she may need a headband. She gave us a prescription for a free consult with Cranial Technologies. I freaked out when she told me some of the possible effects of a flat head. Which were ears that shifted out of place, shifting of facial features in the worst case senario and possible nuerological problems. We took her when she was 3 months to get the consult and she does need a headband. Our insurance wouldn't cover Cranial Technologies even though the specialist we took her to said to get it done there. Our insurance would only cover a place call Hanger. I did my research on the bump boards and on the Internet. And we decided to pay out of pocket and go with Cranial Technologies. Cranial specializes in headbands. That's all they do. Hanger on the other hand is a ortho company and does many other things. I would check if there is a Cranial Tech near you and take your twins in for the free consult. It's free and you can see what they have to say. The pedi told me the younger she gets the helmet. The less time she will have to have it. They told us 2-3 months. Sophia goes this Monday to get scanned. It takes a week for her headband to come in. I know this is the best thing for her. She's so little she won't even know it's there or remember it. The DOC band costs 3800. Good luck.
