Do you really need a mobile?

I'm looking for a mobile and can't believe the prices on these things. There also aren't many that have good reviews.  Do you really even need one of these?

Re: Do you really need a mobile?

  • No. You can only have it set up until they can't reach and stuff then you need to take it down. I will be putting money in something more useful.

There is so much stuff out there that serves no purpose. It is such a skeem by big companies to make mom's feel they "need" to have some of this stuff.

  • Depends on what mobile you are talking about. I like the Tiny Love mobiles- the colors are bright and play music from Bach, Mozart and... Beethoven. Every baby I know that has one loves it! The ones that coordinate with the bedding sets are use let and you have to wind for music. I would never spend money on those but would for the Tiny Love ones.

  • Umm. No!

There are plenty of pay phones around if you really need to make a call.

The only reason I have one in China is a) because it's dirt cheap (like, $20 every 3 months), and b) because DH needs to be able to reach me at all times in case of emergency.

I didn't have one when I lived in Canada, and neither did DH.  Our friends complained a bit but really, it saved us almost $200 a month and we'd rather put that money down on our mortgage!

  • I'm not sure if they are a must have or not, but they don't have to be expensive. MH is making an origami mobile, we're going to use paper that matches the nursery decor. It should be both adorable and economical.

    This made me laugh.

No you really don't need one, like the pp said when they start sitting up and grabbing at things they can be a safety hazard. Some people use the things that hang on the side of the crib and light up and play music instead. we didn't have either. IMO crib time is sleepy time not play time.

  • Need? No, but they are cute! I am wondering where you are looking, cause the one that matches my bedding is only 20 bucks. I agree with PP about the Tiny Love ones. You can't beat the continuous music, and you can even detach the mobile part from the music part to use as a music player later. Very nice.
  • I doubt it... And I think you only really have em till X amount of months. Once they can reach it,I think it's pretty much just torn down!
  • With my son I bought the Nautica one bacuse it was cute and matched. What a waste of money. It only played music for maybe a minute. Then I bought the ocean wonders one. It played music and did a cool light show on the ceiling for like 10 minutes. He loved it and I was able to set it up high so I used it until he was out of the crib at 18 months! You can remove the crib attachment and it is now on his dresser and I can still use it as a light show and for music. Really cooll.

  • I'm lurking here because my baby is asleep, but I actually didn't get one and now I want one. Nothing musical, but one black and white that gently moved would be perfect. My boy loves to look at high contrast things, and I would like to hive him a little more stimulation that our black picture frames on our light walls. It is SO cute when he is getting changed and is looking at something and coos, he seems so content and happy. I like to encourage content and happy behavior.

  • We never had one and Brooke did fine.  We did have the Baby Crack Machine which projects stuff on the ceiling but I don't think she ever noticed it.
  • Sorry, but I'll be the one to come out and say it.  Yes, they highly recommend them for the baby's mental and visual development in the first few months.  I've been reading up on baby development and many "toys" that you might think of as unnecessary (mobiles, rattles, blocks, etc.) are actually meant for your child's brain development.

You can get them used on craigslist and stuff for very cheap (like $20 for the nice fisher price ones).  You are supposed to take them down when the baby gets bigger and can start pulling on them, so they actually say to buy that used-since its not something that would have gone in the baby's mouth, for example.

  • We never bought one for DD, and I don't plan on buying one for DS.  Personally I want the crib for sleepinng... not stimulation or playing,

  • 15-month old DS has a jungle-themed room, so we shelled out the $$ for a Fisher-Price rainforest mobile that lights up and has plush animals that spin around and leaves that open and close.  I would recommend one of these or the Tiny Love brand b/c they are more interactive than the typical crib mobiles.  Since we're expecting baby #2, DH recently admitted that he wasn't fond of spending the almost $45 on DS's mobile at first, but that we've gotten a great lifespan from it.  When DS started to stand in his crib, we took off the top portion, leaving the music player.  We know when he's up in the mornings b/c we'll hear him singing along to the classical music playing from it. ;)

This . i'm not sure what I would have done without it. . we had this one and it is what helped put DD to sleep .  and when she got too big for it to be attached to her crib . .we got a hook to hang it from the celling.  it was such a life saver for us.

  • We had the Tiny Love and my DS loved it. ?It really seemed to help calm him down. ?It lasts just the right amount of time. ?When he got old enough to reach it we took off the mobile part but kept the music player. ?We would often wake up and hear him playing with it.
  • We ddin't buy one, and then found that she loved the one on the pack n play.  We ended up getting one that played music and had soft lighting, and she looooved that thing.
