High-Risk Pregnancy

Low Amniotic Fluid Level

Thought I would post and see if anyone has had any experiences with this-After two bouts in the hospitals with PTL at 32 and 33 weeks (got the steroid shots for baby's lungs), I've been on bed rest at home and things have stayed quiet. Went in for growth U/S at the perinatologist on Fri. and growth is good (baby measuring 5 lbs 9 oz. at 34/6), but she said the amniotic fluid level is low (6.5). I stayed for a non-stress test, which he passed, but I have to come back twice a week for re-checks/tests. Sounds like they will induce if the level goes under 5- that seems so close, I was really really praying I would make it to term, does anyone know how quickly the fluid level starts drying up or how long it can stay at that level for? Everything happened real fast so I didn't think of all these questions, which I will of course ask when I return on Tuesday. I am 35 weeks now, goal is to make it to 37!Thanks in advance!

Re: Low Amniotic Fluid Level

  • I was told my amniotic fluid was on the low side at 6.5 around 20 weeks.  My OB simply told me to be sure to lay on my side 12 hours a day (not necessarily in a row) and to drink fluids which can help it fluctuate some.  I have had to go in for ultrasounds monthly to keep an eye on it.

When I went back last week it the amniotic was up to 10 the dr said it was due to GD.  They are still monitoring me monthly.

  • I go in twice weekly for low amniotic fluid.  My doctors tell me to try and drink atleast a gallon of water a day and take it very easy (modified bed rest) My levels have not gone up but they have also not fallen more.  The goal is to either keep at the same or get it to go up.  I have been at low levels since before a week before Christmas.  LO is still growing fine and they are not worried about the fluid as long as she keeps passing her twice weekly tests.

Another thing they told me is that sometimes LO is just laying in a bad position which can make your levels appear lower than they are.  My levels have flucuated as much as 4- in one week just by the position she was in.  Just something to keep in mind.

    Hope that helps a little.

  • I also had to have a BPP and one week my level was 7, the next it was 1 and I was immediately induced. I know it can be scary to be induced, but it's better than the alternative! Best of luck to you!
  • I had a BPP at 29 weeks and found my fluids at a 6.  I've been on modified bed restd ever since.  My fluids have gone up to 10.5-11 and stayed that way for the last 2 weeks.  I drink tons of water and gatorade and nothing with caffeine in it.  I go in for NST's once a week.
  • Like pp said, drink tons of water!! At around 31 weeks my fluid level was at a 5. I was told that it may be because the bp meds I am taking can cause you to dehydrate and to drink lots of water. So, I've been drinking as much as I can and going back weekly to have it checked. At 32 weeks it was up to a 7 and at 33 weeks it was up to a 9!
  • My fluid has been all over the place with these two.

Like pp have said, it can fluctuate very quickly. I have gone in for a BPP or just a regular U/S and my fluid will be 10cm and then I will go home and rest and drink drink drink (my OB says to "drink until you think you can't possibly drink any more...and then drink more") and I will return a couple days later and my fluid will be at 14 or higher.

Recently, however, my fluid has been really low. My OB says she wants to see me (and the twins) at nothing below 10cm right now, and today my BPP read 6.21cm. I am going to drink drink drink because I have another appointment on Thursday and we'll see how that goes.

But, with my experiences, fluid level can vary. I would lay down and drink as much as you can! good luck!

  • I was seeing a Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) Specialist for low amniotic fluid.  Mine was 2.2.  Just so you know, 2.2 was alarming, but once I got up over 3 cm, my team of doctors were completely fine with everything.  They said that it was plenty of fluid for a healthy delivery. Fortunately, my levels went up even more after that...but I was so relieved once I got into that 3-4 range.  When I asked if I could carry the baby full term, their response was most definitely...or as close as I would have even without the fluid issues.  HTH
