Babies: 3 - 6 Months

so I need a new car

and when I say car I mean truck or SUV. Honestly I don't know how any of you ladies do it with a CAR, seriously?? I can't get it... I have a Hummer and until this past week I was confident that it would be plenty big for our family. Well then my cousin came to town with her 1 year old and having just 2 car seats (1 booster, 1 infant) in the back and 2 adults with purses and coats it became very clear that there is NO way it's going to work for our next child. Don't even get me started on the 2 strollers crammed in the back!!

We were packed in like sardines. I know what you're thinking, a Hummer is HUGE, but I'm telling you it's not, not even close. Even my cousin was shocked at how little room there was. The crappy part is that when I bought the car, I specifically asked the dealer if it could accomodate 3 carseats in the back. "OH yes it will, and all 3 seats have the LATCH system" and I guess he's right, technically you could cram 3 in there but holy PITA!! There's no way...

Mind you we live in Colorado, so an SUV is a must in my book. I've had cars pre-kids and it just doesn't cut it for me. Hubbs drives a huge diesel truck so we're large car people. So I'm looking at getting either the Escalade ESV or the Denali XL (they're the big long ones like a Suburban). That way we can fit the children comfortably and all 3 dogs and whatever other circus animals we find along the way LOL.

Anyone have either of these cars and care to share any tips or inside info?

  • me too.  We have a Nissan Xterra but it just slightly too small for us.  We are going to look at the Armada tomorrow....and we might..just might look at some minivans.  We have amazon people in my family (my sister is 6 feet tall and my dh is 6'3 and my little brother is 6'2) and they all complain in the xterra.  We have had it for a while so.....we are going to start looking.  I haven't looked at the Escalade or Denali though.

  • i have a honda cr-v and even that makes me nervous about having another kid. we wouldn't be able to use the infant car seat we have now when we have a second kid b/c we have the graco safeseat so it's pretty big and can only fit in the middle seat. we had planned to keep that until we have 3 kids, and hopefully we can do that. it's obviously cheaper to buy a new car seat than a new car :)

but my family rented the huge escalade once, and we liked it. i wish i knew more ... my mom has the toyota landcruiser which is pretty big, and she loves it! my dad is a huge safety freak, so i'm assuming it is really safe.

  • I vote on the escalade. There's no way in hell we could afford that so I don't have one, but a lot of Dr's I work with do and they seem to love them.

  • I'm going to be looking into getting a ::choke:: minivan once my saturns are paid off next year.
  • lol, yes I joke about the circus here at the Farrell house, it's quite crazy here, if I'm not cleaning up baby puke I'm cleaning up dog puke or poop. And as soon as I prepare a bottle of formula I have to prepare special food for one of our dogs, it's really like having 4 kids and 5 when DH decides to be a slob ha!

My Dad keeps telling me to get a minivan and I just can't do it... I can't rock the "Mothership" although it would solve all of our problems, I just can't bring myself to do it haha.

  • I was in your exact same shoes ! I drive a Range Rover sport and I knew that with Sloane coming we would need a bigger family car because we also have two huge labradors .The back of the sport is too small if I need to fit them both in there. It's also too close to where she is in her car seat to worry about the dogs jumping over the seat so we got a Denali XL as our family / travel car and now I find myself driving it more often than my sport (that might just be cause it's new though, my Range Rover is three years old and there is nothing like new car smell Big Smile ) I really like it, we looked at an Escalade but I figured if we were going to get something bigger, we should get something A LOT bigger. It basically depends on how big you want to go. It was a HUGE change from my RR in terms of getting used to driving it (I still won't take it downtown, I'm scared) but a Hummer is a lot thicker so the change might not be so bad for you. I can fit an army in the back....strollers, groceries, everything !!!
  • I too am anti-minivan....
  • I have a Grand Cherokee and with just one baby and all his stuff, it is small.  I also refuse to be a mini-van Mom one day.  My MIL has the Buick Enclave, it's a crossover, and it is beautiful.  It "sort of" looks like a mini-van, but if you go look at it in person, it is far from.
