We have the Homedics Sound Spa (no lullabies or projector) and love it! It has a plug to use at home and can run on batteries if we are going to be anywhere for a while. We keep it on ocean at night and rain during the day (because the rain drowns out more noise). Love love it.
You don't NEED the projector. We had the projector one first. I liked that it produced basically enough light that you could see if your child's eyes were open or shut but there isn't enough light to change a diaper by (light was more like a nightlight). Since LO was in our room with us, it did make our room a little too light for us though. It wasn't long before the projector was making a louder buzzing noise and shortly after that it stopped spinning. Shortly after it stopped spinning, the light on the projector burnt out. I returned it to the store only to find out it wasn't sold anymore there and I got the regular sound spa instead. LOVE IT. The regular one is awesome for traveling since it works on batteries or by being plugged in and it is not as bulky as the projector one so it is much easier to pack.
We bought it after I read about it here, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on LO. I would think a regular c.d. with white noise would work just as well.
We love this! I use it every night. The projector is my favorite part! I turn it on when she wakes up to eat at night and it is just the right amount of light to keep her asleep. I also love that it has a timer so I just hit the timer for 15 or 30 minutes before I feed her and that way it goes off on its own when we are both asleep again.
