How mad would you be?

The health insurance company that DHs work uses changed Jan 1st. They automatically switched dh and the boys over, but needed a form filled out by me. So I did it...in December. Dh told me he took care of turning it in. Well...I find out yesterday that he forgot to turn it in and the the hr department says that it had to be in within 31 days of the switch and now it is too late. They even tried to submit it and it was denied for that reason. I have to wait for open enrollment in DECEMBER!!!!

  • He'd never live it down.

  • I would be mad beyond measure.
  • beyond mad. I have a pre-existing condition, so that means it wouldn't be covered for two years after insurance picked up in December.

  • HOboy. I don't know what I'd do. You should fake the swine flu and let him see the consequences of his non-actions.

Uhhh...ditto.  I mean, everyone makes mistakes, but that's huge.

Livid wouldn't even begin to describe it.

What an idea...the wheels are turning now. Seriously though, what am I supposed to do in the meantime?

  • Add another to the "beyond livid" category.  I'm thankful that our insurance mysteriously knew about DD's birth before we even added her on, and that we didn't have to do anything since DH NEVER would have remembered.  ::sigh:: Men!

have you looked into individual policies?

Yep - I think that's going to be the way you have to go, unfortunately.

I'm in this boat.  In fact, I'd probably have a hard time finding insurance that would insure me.

  • There are no words for how angry I would be, and the resultant $hitstorm that would make the current snowstorm look like absolutely nothing.

On a more rational level, however, I'd call the insurance company, a company HR rep, etc and see if there were anything whatsoever that could be done. Ask whether you can get Cobra for the time you're uncovered, especially if you don't have any basic options available through other avenues. I'd also check with the people who hold our life insurance, car and home insurance, and if you have parents or grandparents who are USAA members, you can enroll with them--their customer service people are absurdly helpful and could walk you through what if anything they have available and what it could look like for you.

I really, really hope that you can get things sorted out quickly!

Not yet...any suggestions on where to start?

Honestly I don't have any experience BUT I did a quick google search and found this:

  • This totally sounds like something my DH would be capable of- he is the most forgetful man in the world!

I would look into your state plans first (dependent upon income)then...

    United Health Care

    Humana

    Anthem

I thought about looking into state healthcare first. We might actually qualify being a family if five on one income. I just feel bad or guilty about it for some reason.

  • I would explore multiple avenues and agree to look into private insurance, state insurance if you qualify, and Cobra on your old policy.  You typically have 60 days to enroll in Cobra and it is retro-active, so it would cover any appointments you've had in the past month though it is often pricey.

I felt guilty too but we took out in addition to my husbands insurance because it covered things his did not and it only depended on my income- which is zilch now so we were able to get it.  Don't feel guilty you have to take care of yourself.
