Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What do we know about gripe water and similar?

Our baby has been really fussy the last couple of days and it seems to be wind.

We looked at a couple of gripe water options in the supermarket but she's only two weeks old and I'm reluctant to use anything without doing some research.

So just wondering if it works, if you feel it's safe/ok, any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks

Re: What do we know about gripe water and similar?

  • We tried it with our first son and it was recommended by his pedi. Unfortunately it didn't seem to help him. His pedi told us that many babies are fussy and gassy in the early days because they have immature digestive tracts. You can try things to help, but they don't always work. More often than not, they get a bit better around 6-8 weeks. Hang in there!

  • I chose to try the Baby Bliss brand. It didn't really do anything for my son, but I felt safe giving it to him.  Since it didn't help his fussing, I tossed it. I give him gas drops (infant mylicon) now sometimes instead- since it is mainly gas that makes him inconsolable sometimes.

  • we have little tummies gripe water and it works wonders on hiccups.  she gets them ALL the time! and it seems to relax her as well
  • We give dd gas drops.  Thank you inventer of these.  We have given Little Tummy's Gripe Water to her when everything else has failed.  After about 10 - 15 minutes, she calms down.

  • Gripe water helps my LO a lot!  All of our kids have been gassy as babies, and we started using it wil DD1 and continued with the other two.  I find it works best if she gets it before a feeding.

  • I have never used it and have never used gas drops either. I thought about it once, but I am not a fan of medicine type things unless absolutely necessary. Everyone has different opinions and experiences. Our pedi said you can give her water but it doesn't really help. To each their own. If you're worried, it isn't going to do harm to her but it may not help either. Just read the directions because you can give LO too much water.
