What age would you let your DD color their hair?

I'm sitting at the salon and there is a girl at least 12 getting here hair colored. Is that how young it starts now adays?

  • Hmmm. I don't know. A permanent color? 16 maybe?

  • When she can pay for it herself.

I like this answer.Hopefully she won't want to do it until she is at least in high school.  I am 30 and have never colored my hair.

  • My mom let me put color in when I was 16 but she put her foot down when it came to bleaching my hair.

  • My older girls' grandmother is a beautician so they get their hair done for free.  They were about 14 yrs old when they get foil highlights but they never have gotten their hair colored because they never wanted to.

  • I'd like to say 16 or 17 or so and be certain that the rule would still stand when DD is that age.  But, I have noticed that girls are getting highlights and such at REALLY young ages now.  I just don't see the need in it!

  • I was in 6th grade the first time my mom let me color my hair.
  • This girl was getting a full on color done. No highlights. It just seemed awfully young!!

  • Depends on what she wants and why she wants it.   If she was struggling with body image problems and her hair was not a good color, I might consider it at 13 or 14.  If she wanted to go goth black, we would have to talk.  I am honestly not sure.
  • Given that I've never colored my hair at 28 I'm going with over 18 and with her paying for it herself.  That said if she had a color that looked terrible on her I might reconsider if she asked.

I will say that the silly temporary colors that were popular when I was in high school (black, blue, green pink) would be okay with me (as long as it's not for school picture day or a major holiday) although I'd pretend to fight it on principle.

  • I frosted my hair (oh, the 80's, you were BAD for hair) when I was 17.
  • I'd say maybe senior in high school.

I've had 2nd graders in my class who dye their hair.  Looks so trashy.

For some reason it does not bother me when the boys color their hair (usually blue,) but bleaching girls' already naturally beautiful hair is beyond me.

  • I started doing mine at 13. I have blah, dishwater blonde hair naturally and I hated it. My mom finally gave in to my begging.
  • I colored Ashley's hair when she was around 13 years old.

I still color her hair for her whenever she wants... I dont see the harm in it. It makes her happy.
