Has anyone mixed rice cereal with water?

It lists it as one of the options on the can, but it seems like most people on here use bm or formula.

We're getting ready to start her on some, and I ebf but I hate pumping. No, I mean I hate it. Like, if pumping was a person, I would stab them.

I would probably use formula, but I don't want to give her two new things in one shot. Since the cereal is "extra" and she doesn't need any nutrition from it yet, water should be fine, right?

Who has used water? Did your LO like it?

LOLsies!  I think that water would be fine since rice cereal is primarily for practice anyway but if you EBF then they definitely need the rice since it contains the iron.  My LO did not like plain rice though.  We had to mix it with green beans and he still didn't like it.  Not a rice fan.  We eventually just started him on green beens per Pedi's reccommendations.

  • We are doing oatmeal (rice constipates, and he has enough trouble with that), but I usually just mix it with water.  I hate having to mix up formula just to mix with the cereal, and if he doesn't eat it, I feel doubly wasteful.  We also mixed in green beans to help with flavor.

And before any of you flame me, our pedi actually recommended it.

  • I have always mixed DS's rice cereal with water. He does fine with it. He definitely prefers oatmeal over the rice cereal now though. Just recently I started give his rice cereal (mixed w/water) with 1/2 jar of bananas to help with constipation and flavor. Now that he's been on veggies and has had flavor, the cereal by itself is just too plain and he won't eat it without a little fruit mixed in.

  • I'm sure you could use water.  I don't blame you one bit for not wanting to pump.  It might just be more difficult for you to get her to take it/enjoy it because it won't be sweet at all like bm/formula.   I guess you just have to try and see what happens ;)

Let me know if you have any specific questions once you get started. We've done rice cereal, oatmeal, and now we are slowly adding in veggies and fruit.   :)

    Oh yeah, and ygpm.

    you've got one more, lol.

I will probably be consulting you about solids very soon.

    Thanks for the insight, everyone.

  • There is nothing wrong with using water if that is what you are nervous about.  I used water for DS1 and will use it for DS2 also.

  • We have done both, BM and water. It's fine. He did fine although he is not a big fan of rice itself.

  • The rice cereal that I buy, there are actually two different kinds.  One that you mix with formula or breast milk and one that you mix with water.  I have been using the water one because I hate pumping.

  • I EBF and DS hasn't even had a bottle.  I pump just enough to add to the cereal...which you really don't need much.  I have tried water and DS wouldn't eat it.  He likes it much more with the breastmilk.  But if your LO will eat it with water that is what I would do...I wish mine would.
