High-Risk Pregnancy

Pre-E with first pregnancy...how about baby 2?

I had pre-e with my first pregnancy...gained a lot of weight (mostly water), had HBP...had to wear support hose starting at 16 weeks.  Just wondering if there is anyone out there that had the same symptoms with their first pregnancy and what their 2nd pregnancy was like?

  • I'm interested in seeing any responses ... I had pre-e with my first and I wonder how things will go with another pregnancy.

  • I got it around 30-33w with #1.  Gained 40+ lbs.  This time no pre-e yet, no symptoms or swelling, or HBP.  Only gained 18 lbs so far.  Guess every pg is different....
  • I had pre-e with both of my pregnancies but I lost weight with both 23 on my first and 30 on my second I know hell of a weight lose plan huh lol but I wouldn't be concerned my OB told me that each one is diff so you may be just fine
  • I was fine with DS 1

Had severe Pre-e with DD 1 starting at 29 weeks.

I am 38 weeks with DD 2 now and have only been to L&D once for no movement.  My BP is great and totally controlled by Labetalol twice a day.  I have no swelling, no headaches, no side pain.

If this baby were head down it would honestly be the perfect pregnancy.

  • I had pre-e with my first son. It really developed within the last two months of the pregnany. I had super high bp and major swelling all over. I gained 65 the whole pregnancy. at the end it was at like, 10 pounds a month. Turned out a healthy baby boy and over time i eventually lost some of the weight. only to gain some back (lose and gain again). This time has been great. Swelling only in/around my ankles and it goes away if i put my feet up. Very few aches/pains. My bp has been terrific but since day 1 my doc has me taking a low dose asprin w/my vitamin. I just found out that I have gestational diabetes with this one...with only 41 days left until our sched c-section.
  • oh, also with baby 2 my weight gain is at about 30-35 pounds. (hopefully i can kind of maintain until the big day...)
  • I had pre-e with my 1st pregnancy.  By week 13, my feet were already swollen and I had a lot of problems throughout the pregnancy even though my BP didn't rise until about week 32.  It was pretty bad and I spent a week in the hospital recovering after an emergency c-section at 36 weeks.  I was on BP meds for about 3 months afterwards too.

This time my OB is monitoring me every 2 weeks and I have an appt. with another doctor to monitor my BP.  However, so far (just past 13 weeks), I haven't had any problems so - so far, so good.

The one thing I'm doing differently is I'm going to start doing a GD diet to keep my weight down which should also help my BP.  I'm nervous about getting pre-e again but as everyone else said, every pregnancy is different so I'm hopeful.

  • i developed pre-e w/ 1st at around 35wks, induced at 37wks (gained 10lbs in 1wk), this preg so far so good, dont even have normal preg swelling. i am 37wks on mon and no signs of pre-e which i am estatic about b/c this whole preg i have been soooooo nervous about developing it. i had pre-e b/c i have Lupus and so i just always thought it would develop again but with each passing day i am getting more and more excited that i may go on my own! i only had 1 HBP scare and it wasnt even that high (just this past week), my BP has been excellent, have had headaches and seeing the white floaters but no where near as bad as the first time. i am prayerful and hopeful! and may even have a successful VBAC!

  • I had pre-e with my DD at 33 weeks with a 8 lbs weight gain over one weekend. She was delivered by induction at 36 weeks due to IUGR (she was 5lbs1oz).  By BP was 180/100 when I went to L&D the day I got admitted.  My ankles started swelling about 6 weeks before that though I took my rings off at about 22 weeks (hands swelled first).  My face was HUGE!!  I took no meds, just bedrest and we did great!

This one my BP has ranged at the doctor's office from 120/70 to 144/84 and it fluctuates so they haven't called me anything yet.  I am 28 weeks but have much less swelling than with #1.  Despite this...my high-risk and my OBs (I have seen 2 because one was on maternity leave herself) are convinced that I will have Pre-E with this one too.  I am older, an IVF patient, had pre-E with #1 and  have a physically and emotionally demanding job (orthopedic surgeon).  I have been told to cut back my hours and sit on my duff when I am not at work. Most of the time the highest risk pregnancy is the first one.

    Good Luck!!

  • I want to add that I have been on low dose aspirin prior to pregnancy this time around and I'm not sure if it has helped, but again, so far everything has been great.

  • Thanks for all of your experiences!  I know that each pregnancy is different, but just wanted to see what other people have/are experiencing.

This might be a bit too personal...but anyone who responded....did you have a false-positive downs scan?  I did and that just added that much more stress.

  • I had pre-e with #1 and asked this same question to my ob at my last appt since are are ttc #2.  She said that for girls that have had pre-e in a previous pregnancy only have a 15% higher risk for developing in their consecutive pregnancies.

I had to wear support hose, too!  Never again if I can help it!

  • What do you mean by false positive?  You mean that the statistics came back in the range that they recommend additional testing?  The scan you mean is the NT scan, right?   I know I was right over the border when I had my son.  It was 1 in 286 and I was 1 in 296 (or the other way- which ever way is over the line).  I had an amnio and it ruled out Downs but I definitely thought about it for a while but it didn't add stress to my pregnancy the way that some fatal disease would have.

  • I was 17 years old and had pre-e with DS#1, it developed around 36-38 weeks, I gained 75lbs with him.  I got pregnant with DS#2 when I was 19 and had no complications with him at all.  I'm now 34 and pregnant with DS#3 and they are watching me very carefully.  They have me taking a low dose of baby asprin and also one tums 3 times a day.  So far so good, although I have noticed water retention this week.
  • This pregnancy has been going better than my first, so far--no BP spikes, no swelling, etc...  It's not over yet, though.
  • Oh yes...I went through three pairs of those lovely hose....ugh.  Just thinking about them makes me cringe!

  • Yes, the NT scan.  My scan results were 1: 263.  I wish I had more knowledge at the time and I wouldn't have had the test.  My OB wouldn't do an amnio.  He said he would send me to someone else.  So I went my whole pregnancy without knowing.  I did have to see a perinatologist.

  • last time I had HBP, a lot of swelling bed rest at 34 weeks (had protien in urine late second trimester) had DD at 37 weeks

This time i have HBP I am on procardia again (higher dose then with DD) BP is holding though just started to notice the swelling and vision issues.  Headaches are coming more often too.  I am hopeful though that they get me to 37 weeks again though.  I have lost more weight then first time though because i have been so sick.

  • With DD we had a scare with downs from the 18 week ultrasound.  Went in for a specialts to do it at 22 weeks and everything was okay.
