Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Why isn't he rolling over yet?

JK - I am not freaking out about it but I am just curious as to when DS might start rolling and what signs to look for that he is working towards it.

DS hates TT - we try to give him a few minutes until he freaks out several times/day.  DS will pull his head up when he is laying on my chest or DH's chest and he has great neck control.  When he is on his tummy, he is in a gorgeous yoga pose but nowhere near rolling over.

Just curious if any mommies did anything to encourage their LOs to roll?  I feel like when DS realizes he can do that, he will be thrilled!  He NEVER stops moving.  :)

Re: Why isn't he rolling over yet?

  • My kiddo rolled from belly to back about 4 times when he was 3 months old and has yet to do it since. He finally figured how to roll back to belly on Tuesday. I haven't really done anything to help him do it- now that he's stronger he is able to twist himself in ways that he couldn't before.

  • I was a little bit freaking out when my LO didn't roll...he just started a week or so ago. But, he won't go tummy to back, only back to tummy.

LOL!  I thought I was the only one in this boat!  DS did the tummy to back thing a handful of times and that's been in.  He has no problems going from his back to his belly now in his PnP!

  • DD hated TT but we kept trying a few mins. a few times a day, then DD rolled for the first time at 7 weeks 2 days then wouldn't do it again. After she would start to get upset I would roll her slowly from her belly to her baack and she would play for 15-20 mins. happily. After a week she started rolling over on her own again. Now as soon as we lay her on her belly she rolls to her back. GL
  • DD just did a few times recently.

from back to front - shes rolled on her side for forever but never progressed beyond that. Then she started turning her face to the floor once she was on her side, and I would nudge her torso over and she would pitch over and onto her tummy. Then I would fix her arms to prop herself up. She'd be so impressed that shes hang out for a minute or two and then cry. Then I roll her back.

Front to back - she was just having a good day and standing tummy time for a few moments longer (the key, imo, is to have fun things to watch to distract them) and then just pitched her head to the side and flopped over. Before, she'd been arching her back a lot while laying down and looking behind her (like in my siggy) so I think thats the torso strength needed. She'd also "dance" while laying down, bending each side in turn.

  • Your DS is still young to be rolling over.  DD rolled over at 5 months and 1 day and now she won't stop.  I know plenty of babies older than DD that still aren't rolling.  Don't worry, your DS will get it!

Try putting a mirror in front of him during tummy time, DD always loved that.

  • DD has yet to roll over.  I think it's still early for your LO though.

  • DD isn't even close to rolling yet. I do put her on a boppy during tummy time with some toys down and in front of her. She seems to really like that and will last much longer than on the floor.

  • Don't worry I'm sure it will happen when your DS is ready. DD hasn't done it yet either and I asked the Dr about it yesterday at her 4 month appt and she said not to worry about it that she will do it when she's ready. She can get almost all the way over from back to tummy but not quite the whole way. I help her every now and then to go all the way over but she can't do it herself yet. And she won't tolerate tummy time for more than 3-5 minutes no matter how fun I try to make it or how much I try to distract her. So she hasn't even tried tummy to back yet. I try not to worry about it, easier said than done, and just keep encouraging her to do it on her own.

  • The norm now is around 5-6 months from what my pedi told me. It used to be 3 back when every baby slept on their tummies, but now thats a no-no so its taking them longer to get it done. Not a big deal though, Ive never seen an adult not able to roll.
  • Mine hasn't rolled over yet and I'm not worried! Every baby is different!!

  • DD started rolling onto her side around 3.5 months.  She didn't fully roll over from her back to her tummy until a day before her 5 month birthday.  She still cannot roll from her tummy to her back.

Your DS probably needs more tummy time to help develop the neck and upper back muscles.  When DD finally rolled all the way over, it was it because she lifted her head and chest to get her there.

Our pedi said we needed to encourage the tummy time, even though DD hated it at first.  The reason for this was because her head was flattening on one side.

  • Mine has NEVER rolled during the day while we are playing, only in his crib. It will happen, mama, no worries!

LOL - this is the best advice.  :)
