2nd Trimester

Pet Owners

I have a little 12 lb silky terrier/poodle mix, he's 2yrs old.  He is always getting the attention of his parents and more so from his daddy.  Well, I know that we have to start training him to not jump on us when we sit down and get him out of the habit of expecting to sleep on the bed whenever he wants.  I'm starting now.

What are your plans for preparing to bring your newborn home, especially if you don't already have kids in the house?

Re: Pet Owners

  • If we are lucky enough to be back on our own/with our cats, we plan on having a blanket left with LO for the first day. Before we come home with her, DH will go home with the blanket let the cats smell it and encourage them as they smell. We also plan to introduce her as soon as we get home and just be careful with them/her and try not to leave them alone until we can tell that they're comfortable.

  • I don't know what I am going to do. I have a cat who thinks he is my God. :) When we get baby stuff up I think I will keep him away from it with the fear of the squirt gun. That tends to work most of the time.
  • We have birds, who we treat like our real kids.  They have always been in our bedroom but we are going to put them in their own "bird room" and set up perches and toys and areas to fly to so we will feel less guilty about not being able to spend as much time with them.  This way we can let them out of their cages unsupervised for a bit so they still get some freedom and exercise.

  • Here's a blog of a girl on the pets board that I am using: https://babiesandbeasts.blogspot.com/search/label/The MOST IMPORTANT post in here

I highly recommend following the steps on the blog. Also, my trainer told us to do the same things as are on this blog, so I know its great advice.

I am playing the baby sounds CD and carrying around a doll. Also, I am varrying his routine so he's used to things chanigning. In addition, as we get things we set them up and actually run them. In my living room we have the bassinett (it will be staying there) and the bouncy seat set up and I run each for awhile every day. This way, even though the baby will be new, he'll be used to the sounds she makes and the furniture for her will be old news. Less to adjust to and less training I'll have to do when she gets here since he'll already know "no jumping on the bassinett" etc.

ps...my puppy is a 9mos old husky/lab mix...he needs lots of time to adjust and he's a mommy's puppy...we cuddle all the time.

Once she's here, I know it will be difficult, but I plan to have Harley-Mommy time each day...even if we just nap together on the couch...but a time that is just for the two of us (probably while baby naps)...just so he knows mommy still loves him.

  • I am looking over the blog (from pittyboo on the pets board)

I am planning on getting a book about the best way to get the dogs used to a baby and getting a cd to play to get them used to the sound of a baby.

  • We have a 4 year old chocolate lab who believes he is an 80lb lap dog.  I've played a cd of baby sounds a few times and he's pretty much ignored it and been fine.  Soon we'll probably start carrying the baby doll around and will bring the baby blanket home as well.  I hopefully won't have too much to worry about as he's pretty good natured and happy, but still pretty hyper and rambunctious, so we'll definitely have to make sure he's getting enough exercise after the baby is home.

I'm more worried about my parent's cocker spaniel who is very possessive and territorial...

He's also increadibly affectionate & NEEDS attention.. also, the soon to be baby's room has always been his, he is sure in for a surprise when we start redecorating.
