shower gift ideas for first time mom?

I am attending a shower in a few weeks for a first time mom, I don't have any children (yet!) so I am looking for suggestions on what some of the best gifts any of your first time moms recieived.  I am willing to spend up to $100. Also, she isn't finding out the sex of the baby.

Ditto.  I have a hard time seeing a 1st time mom who is having a shower not registering.

  • She actually isn't registered anywhere!!  I'm just wondering what gifts really stood out and were useful for first time moms. thanks!

  • Registries are always good to go off of.  Diapers (in size 2+), wipes, shampoo, soap, lotion, etc. are always great things to have and you can never have too many.  Um, pacifiers, bottles, washcloths, burp rags, receiving blankets, towels, Dreft, clothing, etc.  If you're unsure, just stick with those types of things.  Again, you can never truly have too many, and you'd be surprised how many people don't buy the staples.
  •  I agree with the previous post..essential items mostly!
  • Do you know if she has a highchair, a PNP, a swing, or a jumperoo?  Any one of those things are good to have.  If you get her any clothes just make sure it is size 6 months or larger and fits the season you think the baby will be wearing by that time.

Are you sure?!?!  That's amazing.  At any rate, from what you are willing to spend, I'd talk to her to get a few ideas, or at least to pick her brain to see what she's already got/what her family might be getting her.  For the amount you can get a larger "gear" item (car seat, swing, stroller type deal), and that's the sort of thing you'll want some input from her as to what she's looking for in terms of style.

  • I am also not finding out the sex of our baby. Something gender nuetral that I would have loved to register for, but turned out to be tricky was children's books. I would love to get baby's first book collection going. Books to read to baby, and some children's classics that were my favorites as a kid too. I think that would be a very thoughtful gift and you could write something on the inside covers so they will always remember who got them thier fav books. Good Luck!

  • I had a registry, but I did NOT have an exersaucer on it, and someone bought me one anyway.  I thought it was a great idea.  Maybe look at the jumperoo style!

With no registry, just prepare for the possibility of duplicates of anything . Totally not your fault, of course!

TTC #1 for one year with annovulation....
    Clomid Cycle #1: 50mg = BFP
    =Beautiful baby girl born May 23, 2009
    Lilypie Fourth Birthday tickers
TTC#2: BFP Cycle #1, no fertility meds!
    Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • I'm also a first time mom who does not know the gender. I'd talk to her and try to find out what she needs. Also, I'd stay away from buying clothes and buy something the baby can use 6 months plus. such as a basket of things the baby could use for solid foods like bibs, spoons, trainer cup (PBA free) , bowls, splat mat.
  • Make sure you include the gift receipt with your gift/card because of the possbility of duplicates - this way she can go to the store and get store credit to get something she needs.

  • I am expecting my first baby in May... and I was hesitant to register because I need so many things, I don't want to tell people where to buy things.  As far as things that I really want/need.

Receiving blankets, washclothes, pacifiers, diapers, wipes, hooded bath towel, onesies, burb clothes, white fitted crib sheets, child proofing kit, baby thermometer/

My one friend said the best gift she ever received was a basket of baby medicine ie. ora-gel, baby tylenol, gripe water, tempra.

Also find out if she is doing breast feeding or formula.. because there are lots of things she will need for either option.  Another good question is if she is considering doing cloth diapers or disposable.

My baby is being born at the end of May, so i don't need a lot of outfits... but diapers and wipes will always be used.

  • Without seeming like I'm advertising here I'd like to suggest a beautiful diaper cake!   All moms-to-be love getting a diaper cake at their shower.  I got one and I loved it, I made one for my SIL and she loved it!  I had so much fun making it that I decided to make a business out of it so if you like this idea let me know.  Here is a picture of a gender neutral one that I recently made:
