Present and Past BF'ers (poll)

My sister just had her second DC and I noticed last weekend when I was visiting her that she uses the football hold to nurse DS and I always use the cradle hold b/c I could never figure the football hold out.

Re: Present and Past BF'ers (poll)

  • We do cradle now that she's bigger, but did football when she was tiny. We did side-lying while we coslept, the first 4 1/2 months.
  • Loading the player...
  • I answered cradle but when she was a newborn and much smaller I used the football alot or the cross cradle.  The cradle is just the easiest and most comfy for us now.

  • Cradle and side lie (it took a while to get the hang of side lie, but once we did, I love it). I hate the football hold. I think it's awkward.

  • I had such latching issues in the beginning I am scared to try any others! It seems like even with cradle if I move my arms too much her latch isn't as good. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
  • If I need to get some more rest, I do a sidelying position, but most of the time I do a cradle position. Football worked easier when DS was first born.
  • We do the cradle. We tried the football at the hospital when we were trying out different positions, but DD never liked it and I didn't find it that comfortable. The cradle, or cross cradle works for us.

  • Side laying occasionally, like when its early morning. I will bring him into my bed and we lay together. Most of the time I do my variation of cradle. I could never get the hang of balancing his head in the crook of my elbow, so I hold the back of his head with my hand. It works, but I swear I'm getting carpel tunnel from it

     This pretty much exactly!

  • I said cradle because that's what we do now.  We did football when he was a newborn.

  • Cradle...could never get the football and sidelying never works.

  • I did the football the first two weeks but do the cradle now.  It was easier for me to learn on the football for some reason.

  • when he was a newborn, i did cross cradle. i also did the football hold on my left side b/c it came out so quickly that it helped him to be a bit more elevated.

now, we usually just do the cradle hold.

we never tried the side lying position.

  • For pretty much the first two months I only used cross-cradle, which is what my LC taught me. Then Henry suddenly started getting fussy and I tried football hold, which helped. I'll also nurse side-lying at least once a night, though usually only on my right side (the left hurts!)

  • I used football mostly. The first few days after my c-section it was so uncomfortable for me to have her laying across me. Then I got used to that hold. But she did better on my left side if she was cradled. So I cradled on the left, football on the right. Weirdm but it worked while it lasted. I only EBF'd for a few weeks.

  • cradle and side laying.  I LOVE the side laying. It helped me to get a lot more sleep.

  • We do cradle during the day (weekends or weeknights before he's gone to bed.) and side lying for his last nursing session before bed. If we bring him to bed in the middle of the night we'll do side lying then too.

Side lying is actually easiest for us. When he was first born I had a spinal headache from the epi. The only way I wasn't in excruciating pain was to be laying flat. So for the first week, that's pretty much how he ate. It's his favorite way to nurse.

    This.

  • The first 2 or 3 weeks we did the football hold, it was the only one that worked for us. Then we switched to the cross-cradle hold w/ the Bobby and now use side-lying at night when we're in bed. I use the cradle hold if I'm out or don't feel like using the Boppy.
  • i did football only for the first week cuz my c/s area was so sore and even the slightest bit of pressure near that region hurt. i started doing the cradle after that and haven't done the football since. i got the hang of side nursing while laying down from about 1-3 months when we co-slept.

i still use the boppy when we are nursing at home! DD is just so big and it gives my arms a break.

  • cross cradle

  • Football is the only thing that has worked for us.  I keep trying the cradle, but she never gets on right and it hurts.  I have F cups so I don't know if that is part of the problem or not.

  • I did the football hold the first 3 weeks or so. He just couldn't latch good with the cradle hold at first. Eventually he got the hang of it and that's how we do it now (cradle.) Middle of the night, early morning feedings are almost always side-lying. So much more relaxing!

  • I use football (usually just on my left side) and cross-cradle because that's what I learned with the LC.  I've never done side lying.

  • i've been doing football since day 1. it hurts any other way :(

everyone laughs and says, "he's too big for that position now." hmmm, it's still the only one that works for me/him.

  • Mostly I use the cradle hold but on occasion (like when she was sick last week) I used the football hold because it kept her more upright so she was eating better (probably cause she couldn't breathe lying down).
  • We would do a mixture of cradle and side-lie.  We would only use side-lie at night b/c it was easier on both of us.
  • Mixture:

The *cross cradle hold worked better for my right side. (correcting because I always get football and cross cradle mixed up for some reason lol)

The cradle worked better for my left.

And when I was home, we almost always did the side-lying position.

  • I didn't really try the cradle hold until DS was a bit older and had better head control.  But the cross-cradle hold was my fav when he was a newborn and the football hold was my second fav.  I could never get the side-lying one down right but I didn't really BF long enough to become an expert anyway.

I liked the cross-cradle hold the best because I could move him around easily if I needed to adjust something.  The football hold was really nice because then the baby is out of your way, so to speak, lol.  It feels like you can move a little bit more while feeding if you need to reach for the remote or something, heh.

  • I voted Other b/c I did cross cradle.  Not sure if that qualifies as cradle or not.

  • Cradle for daytime, Side-lying at night

  • Usually cradle, although if I'm really tired I'll do side-lying.

  • Most of the time, I nurse him on the Boppy in the cradle hold or cross cradle. It works really well for us. At night and sometimes during the day we do side lying. We tried football a few times but it wasn't that great for us.
  • When DS was a newborn I did cross cradle.  When I started pumping I would use football if I was going to pump while feeding him.

Now I use cradle or side lying if we're going to bed.

  • I have really big boobs and a narrow shoulder/breast span, so the cradle hold didn't really work because my boob would practically smother my DS's face.  So I would lay him down in front of me on a pillow or boppy, and use my hand (that corresponds with the boob, i.e. left hand left boob) to hold my breast away from his face so he could just get the nipple.  The other hand was free to touch him, or do whatever I needed.

p.s. I don't BF anymore because of my supply.

  • We started with football when she was tiny, and now do cross-cradle. The only time I ever use traditional cradle is when we NIP.

This, with the exception that we didn't cosleep that long, just for occasional naps. We had latch issues in the beginning and football was quiet helpful for that. I also seldom use a pillow anymore, only if I'm in a seat with no armrests. Seriously my child is too big for football!
