Babies: 3 - 6 Months

American Baby= bad info

In their latest issue they have an article on vaccinations. They say to give your baby Infant Tylonal before the shots and afterward to let them suck on a bottle of sugar water. Ummm, I have been told by the pedi that both of those are no longer recommended. It seems like they should check their advice before printing it.

  • Our Pedi told us to give Tylenol before

  • seriously, that's pretty bad!

Until recently that was advised. But they have done studies that giving it before can lesson the effectiveness of the vaccine.

  • I was also told to give Tylenol before (I didn't) but the sugar water? Not sure about that...
  • I think the tylenol thing is more of what the pedi agrees with/what school of thought they come from. All the ones at our practice say you can give LO some tylenol before shots if you want and you can for sure afterwards. I asked them about that study that came out saying giving tylenol before shots would interfere(sp?) with the vaccinations and they didn't agree with it. We decided not to do it before shots and only after if LO was fussy or feverish.

I didn't know that.  Hm... Our pedi told us not to wait and see if she needed it before giving it to her.  Luckily she's done well and we haven't had to give her anything.

  • We were told to give it right after shots.

But seriously, are you surprised? There is a ton of bad info out there nowadays.

  • hmm...

Our pedi recommending the Infant Tylonal every once in a while for shots but we havnt used it yet and *crosses fingers* he's done fine every time.

I was more surprised by the sugar water than the tylonal.

  • It can go either way, the study that was published stating Tylenol can interfere with the vaccinations is highly debated in the field. Actually MOST pedi's disagree with the info.

That being said it's open to anyone's interpretation and do what works for you.

On the sugar note, sugar reacts on receptors in the brain that stimulate a pain blocking response in babies, therefore a lot of pedis will use special sugar cubes, or sugar pacis, or sugar water when performing procedures such as circumcisions and shots, etc.

Ours too. He's considered one of the best docs around here, too. But the sugar water thing is nuts. Why not just nurse or give a bottle?

  • If you breastfeed, nursing is far better than sugar water.

    Ditto.

This is a bit different than vaccinations but the NICU gave Lilly a sugar paci when doing a lumbar puncture when she was just a few days old....it was to help with the pain.
