Large Weekly Weight Gains

We take LO to the baby clinic weekly as you can go as often as you'd like and since I EBF, it reassures me he is getting enough in his feeds.

This past week he gained 12 oz,  the week before 11 oz, and 11 oz the week before that (which covered a 2-week span)! He was born 8 lb 6oz and is now 10 lb 13 oz.

The health visitors and midwife don't seem too concerned and said "it must be good stuff" but I read a healthy baby will gain 6-8 oz/week. 11 and 12 oz just seems a bit excessive for weekly gains.

I jokingly call him my little glutton, but does this seem strange? Anyone else out there with a big-gainer? The funny bit is, you'd think he was STARVING the way he lunges at my breast sometimes.

We call him 'Piranha.'

  • My kid is gaining darn near a pound a week. He was 7 lb 8 oz at birth and was 13 lb 1 oz last week at 7 weeks. Pedi seems unconcerned, but I'm wondering when the weight gain is going to slow a bit! At this pace, he's going to be 25 lbs by 4 or 5 months!

  • I don't know if that is normal or not but my little chuck gained 1 pound 6 ounces in 2 weeks.  We haven't weighed her since but I am guessing she weighs 12 pounds now and she was 6 pounds when I had her.  I go to the Pedi in a couple weeks; I guess I will see what he says then.
  • mine just gained 2.5 lbs in 2 weeks, pedi just confirmed my thoughts of he must be going through a growth spurt and said he was completely healthy!
