Going for my shot today and I remember how much it hurt the first time so I am not looking fwd to it at all. Does anyone know what the risk is to baby #2 if I didn't get the shot? My Mom is the same blood type as me and she didn't get the shot for either of her pregnancies(at least she doesn't remember) and had no issues. Just curious if anyone knows...I could google it but I should also be working right now, lol.
Re: Rhogam question
I'm Rh Negative too and it only hurts the baby if the baby's blood type is positive.
"While the mother's and baby's blood systems are separate there are times when the blood from the baby can enter into the mother's system. This can cause the mother to create antibodies against the Rh factor, thus treating an Rh positive baby like an intruder in her body. A sensitized mother's body will make antibodies. These antibodies will then attack an Rh positive baby's blood, causing it to breaking down the red blood cells of the baby and anemia will develop. In severe cases this hemolytic disease can cause illness, brain damage and even death."As far as I know, there is no actual threat to your current baby. When I had my m/c (had to get that shot twice in 3 days) it was explained to me that if baby has a positive blood type that gets into your system, your system will look at it as a threat and create antibodies against it. Since it (contamination) most likely happens during birth, there is no threat to the current baby. However, should you get pg again, and that baby has positive blood type, you body will view that baby as a threat and try to terminate it, or cause other issues.
So, it's not so much for this baby that you get the shot, but for future babies.

I have a cousin who was born after his mother's antibodies attacked him. He is disabled as a result, and had to go through several surgeries as an infant (he was also a preemie). Please get the shot, I think the little bit of discomfort is worth it to prevent THAT happening to your future children.
