3rd Trimester

Rhogam question

Going for my shot today and I remember how much it hurt the first time so I am not looking fwd to it at all.  Does anyone know what the risk is to baby #2 if I didn't get the shot? My Mom is the same blood type as me and she didn't get the shot for either of her pregnancies(at least she doesn't remember) and had no issues.  Just curious if anyone knows...I could google it but I should also be working right now, lol.

Re: Rhogam question

  • I'm Rh Negative too and it only hurts the baby if the baby's blood type is positive.

"While the mother's and baby's blood systems are separate there are times when the blood from the baby can enter into the mother's system. This can cause the mother to create antibodies against the Rh factor, thus treating an Rh positive baby like an intruder in her body. A sensitized mother's body will make antibodies. These antibodies will then attack an Rh positive baby's blood, causing it to breaking down the red blood cells of the baby and anemia will develop. In severe cases this hemolytic disease can cause illness, brain damage and even death."

  • As far as I know, there is no actual threat to your current baby. When I had my m/c (had to get that shot twice in 3 days) it was explained to me that if baby has a positive blood type that gets into your system, your system will look at it as a threat and create antibodies against it. Since it (contamination) most likely happens during birth, there is no threat to the current baby. However, should you get pg again, and that baby has positive blood type, you body will view that baby as a threat and try to terminate it, or cause other issues.

So, it's not so much for this baby that you get the shot, but for future babies.

  • Oh, ask them as soon as you get there to try to warm up the shot a bit or give it to you to hold in your hands. The nurse that gave me mine this time around told me she'd been trying to warm it up for me a bit because that makes it hurt less. Guess it's a shot that needs to be refridgerated and the cold makes it worse!

  • I received the shot at 28 weeks and it was painless.  I received it on my upper part of my bum so if you have an option of arm or butt, definitely take the butt!
  • When I had to get IM shots with DS, there was one nurse at the hospital and filled a glove with ice and had me lay on it for a few minutes before the shot - made a huge difference.

I have a cousin who was born after his mother's antibodies attacked him.  He is disabled as a result, and had to go through several surgeries as an infant (he was also a preemie).  Please get the shot, I think the little bit of discomfort is worth it to prevent THAT happening to your future children.

  • Seriously, you're going to be giving birth.  To be scared of a shot and actually thinking about not getting it is silly.  I'm sure there are much more painful things ahead of you that you can't avoid.  I had my shot last week, it was fine.  Stung a tiny bit but it was over in like 5 seconds!
  • I have had 4 or 5 of them and will have another in less than 2 wks. They did not hurt more than any other shot or blood draw (less than the flu shot!). Maybe you just had a bad experience with your previous one. Hope it going ok. I would recommend getting one...there is a reason they do it!
