I really want a SSC that snaps. My options are the O&A, Pikkolo, Beco and Ergo, correct?
I've heard the Ergo isn't good for ladies (or men!) with a fuller figure. Anyone know if this is true? I'm currently trying to drop 50 lbs of baby weight and unhappiness weight, but I'm at my highest weight right now. I don't carry alt in the areas that the straps go (stupid thighs!).
I also want something that my DH can/will wear. I cannot talk him into the MT for whatever reason. He'll wear her in a sling no problem. He's 6'3ish and weighs about 270-280. He is humungously broad chested/shouldered though.
We have a local BWers meeting, but he can't attend because its when he's at work. We also have a store that allows you to try on different carriers. I KNOW they carry the Ergo, but not sure about the others.
Suggestions? Comments?
Re: Snap carriers
I can't speak for other carriers, but I am a full figured woman (size 18) and I have the waist extension for the Ergo and it works great. I wear him all the time and its very comfortable.
Good luck with your choice!
This is my current size as well! Thanks so much for that input! Do you think that the waist extension would work for a guy who wears 38-40 pants? I think it would, but I'm not sure.
there are TONS of options! Beco, Ergo, Action Baby Carrier (cheap!), Olives and Applesauce, Pikkolo, Calyx, Connecta, Babyhawk "Oh Snap!"... um, angelpack.... kanga? I know I'm forgetting some. I'll give you a breakdown of the ones I've tried.
Ergo- everybody seems to love this one. I do not. It does look more manly though, if your H cares about that. I was going to sell it, but my H decided we should keep it in case we ever go hiking (?!?!). It has a very short body compared to the others- if your baby is a leaner, it can get uncomfortable. But if your baby likes to ride arms out, it is nice. Needs a separate infant insert, no internal harness. Probably the smallest waist size- I have a lot more room to grow on the other ones, but only a few inches on the ergo (not that I plan on growing more!) No crossing straps for front carry. Chest clip is a PITA for a front carry.
Beco- the butterfly has an internal harness, has a higher body than the Ergo. It's prettier, too
The internal harness must be used, which some people don't like. The new Beco that is coming out allows for forward facing. Can cross straps for front carry.
Pikkolo- doesn't have a padded waist like the Ergo or Beco. It can be worn higher on your waist, which some people like. You can cross the straps for a front carry- I normally leave the straps crossed, slip the Pikkolo over my head and "pop" her in. Allows baby to face out, but IMO it's not as comfy as a buddha hold in a ring sling. I think the body is shorter than on a Beco.. but I'm not 100% sure.
O&A- has a full buckle or half buckle option. The newer styles come with an infant insert/internal harness. It's optional, though. The straps are different- no chest strap. They sit wider than the others, IMO. It has a padded waist. It has seat darts, which some people don't like as much. It's pretty
It has an interesting sleep hood- it folds into the carrier to create a pocket. So, you can have it out or in.
Action Baby Carrier- cheap!! It doesn't have the deep seat darts. The fabric is more flexible. It's got a padded waist, but the waist is not nearly as padded as the Ergo, Beco, or olives and applesauce. It's pretty easy. The straps don't have as much padding either, but some people really like that. It's got a high body. Oh, and it doesn't have a sleep hood like the others- there is a few inch support you can pop up, but it wouldn't cover you. I think it would be pretty hard to nurse in this one, too.
Those are all the ones I've tried... I know the calyx has an internal harness as well. If you like Mei Tais, the Oh snap! would be a good choice....
I have an Angelpack, and I love, love, love it. I got mine from frogmama dot com. The lady that runs the site was great, and I'll bet if you're thinking of buying from her you could email her with advice about whether or not it would fit. She was really helpful for me and very knowledgeable. She's even done a bunch of "how to" videos on Youtube for BWing.
Another great site for BW advice is thebabywearer.com. The women on there are very familiar with tons of different carriers...some you've never even heard of.
There is a new support belt for the Pikkolo that is a padded waist belt. It costs 20 dollars or something extra and is really simple to attach. I have it and it is nice especially now that DS is a bit heavier
