Insurance...

What will happen with my insurance if I get layed off before baby comes? DH doesnt have any insurance through his work and so I am the sole carrier. I just have no idea what my options would be if this was too happen, which it may. If anyone can help me out that'd be great!!

  • You'd have the option to continue your insurance through COBRA. Unfortunately this is usually VERY expensive. I hope you don't have to go down that road...

  • If you get laid off, do you know if your company will be providing any insurance for you for a certain period of time?  My sister got laid off from her job and the company provided 18 months of it for her.  If this is not an option provided by your company, then I believe you should be offered COBRA as an insurance option.  A person can always go out and get a policy of their own at any time as well.
  • You could continue you under COBRA. It can be very expensive (it's the entire premium, your employer doesn't pay a portion) but in 2009 the ARRA bill included a COBRA subsidy for involuntary terminations. If you're laid off, the govt would subsidize 65% of the premium.

  • You will be able to go on COBRA and actually I think the first 6 months or a year or something is at a way discounted price because of all the people unemployed - the federal government is subsidizing.  I can't remember all the details - i was laid off in August with my benefits lasting another 3 months and then I could have gone on COBRA at a cheaper price for a certain amount of time but luckily we were able to go on my husband's insurance.

  • As PP said, COBRA is probably your best option.  In the past I've also had private insurance, but my guess is that for that to cover maternity, it would be pretty expensive (but, after baby comes, it's an option if you just need to bridge the gap until you find another option).  Another thing to look into is your state laws regarding maternity coverage, and any state insurance programs (there are some specifically geared toward maternity coverage).  In Florida, if you became pregnant while you were covered by insurance, that policy had to continue your maternity coverage through the pregnancy.

  • You can still get COBRA if you quit. I don't know anything about the subsidy though. COBRA is just a continuation of your insurance where you pay the premiums yourself.

  • If you quit you pay for Cobra and it is not subsidized by the government. I remember doing Cobra back in the day and I had to pay $600 per month for it!

    If you get terminated, negotiate with your employer to keep you on their insurance. They can terminate you but have an agreement in place where you keep insurance coverage for a certain amount of months. Emphasize to them that because of your condition you need this coverage and see what you can negotiate. You never know. Or, ask for a severance in enough money to cover your Cobra coverage until the baby comes.

    Also, keep in mind that the baby will need coverage too.  In CA the baby is covered under the mother's health insurance for the first 90 days and then has to get its own coverage. 

  • IF you get laid off, you qualify for COBRA which under the stimulus plan is subsidized 2/3 by the gov't.  I think they extended it six more months but check with your HR department or go online - it's probably on the ARRA (american reinvestment and recovery act) website.  If you quit, you don't qualify for the subsidy.  COBRA for a family plan usually runs about $1000+ per month.
  • Not to scare you, but if you work for a company that has less than 50 employees, you probably do not have a COBRA option.  COBRA is actually done through your employer and they are not required to carry it if they do not have that many employees.  Just wanted you to have the information before you start counting on it.
