way to give meds i haven't thought of?

I feel crappy, I'm so frustrated I could cry.  I can't get any meds down him and what I did get down him he just threw up all over me b/c he's coughing so much.

I've tried putting it in yogurt, which he usually NEVER refuses, in applesauce, in his milk, a big people spoon, just squirting it in which was a big FAIL.  What else is there?  I need him to stop coughing and throwing up all over me.

  • Oh yeah, we went through this last week.  I had to just hold her down and squirt in her mouth mL by mL.  And hold her head back so she had to swallow it.  Awesome experience, let me tell you.

  • When dd is coughing so much she's throwing up I usually try just sips of medicine at a time in a doseage cup.  (ya' know the little cup that comes w/ med).  She won't take it out of the syringe/dropper.  I also have learned to give it to her in the bath tub since she will throw it up when she's so congested and coughing.
  • This sounds awful, but when DS had to take some nasty medicine I coated the syringe with maple syrup and mixed a little in with the meds, too.  The sweetness seemed to distract him from the nasty medicine.

Ha!  I didn't think of syrup.  I did try to put it in chocolate milk and she still wouldn't drink it.

Oh good idea!  I would also have a cup of juice or lollipop handy.  If she took a sip of medicine she could have a sip of juice/lollipop right after.  Sometimes knowing that she would get something that tasted good, she would tolerate the meds.

  • we went through this recently with tamiflu. the maple syrup is a good idea. i tried chocolate syrup and it was a huge fail. what did help eventually was for me to pretend to drink some out of the syringe and then give it to her. she saw me drink it and like it and she wanted some too. also i actually found the less i fought with her to take it the more willingly she eventually took it. good luck!

  • is he old enough to drink it out of the dose cup? jack likes that thing. he'll drink his meds and then take "shots" of water.

  • What about mixing it with a spoon of jelly and then feeding him straight jelly? (I know, this sounds as sugar-rific and awful as the maple syrup, but you have to get it in him somehow).

  • This sounds awful, but we have to put it in the dropper and put it in the back of his mouth and hold his head back. He hates taking medicine too. Or I put a little bit of juice in a sippy with the medicine and give it to him. But, you have to make sure that he will drink all of the juice.

  • Simply use a dropper to put the meds in LO's mouth then BLOW in his/her face. This causes LO to inhale suddenly (and mine does it with a closed mouth every time). The medicine gets sucked down during the inhale. It worked EVERY TIME with LO#1--luckily I haven't had to try it with LO#2 yet (but she's getting the sniffles!). Good luck. Again, worked EVERY TIME.
  • It's hard getting medicine down!  I'm sure your DS hasn't tried coke or sprite yet and neither had mine prior to him needing to take pain medication for a re-circ when he was 17 mos old.  I tried everything and nothing worked.  I finally bought a mini bottle-like thing at WalMart that is for administering medications to babies.  I filled it about half-way with coke (it really is very small, so they're not actually getting much coke at all) and then put the medicine in it.  It was something new to him and he practically inhaled it each time.  It was a night a day difference as far as easy goes.  Good luck!
