Babies: 3 - 6 Months

So now what do I do?

So now that I have made the decision to stop breastfeeding...how did you stop?  All at once, gradually increasing number of formula bottles, what?  I am giving myself until the end of next week to stop.  LO has already been given formula for the past month once a day, so I know she is doing fine with it.  Then starting yesterday we are giving her 2 formula bottles a day and the rest BM.  Yesterday, I gave her bottles for every feeding except for her 2 feedings in the middle of the night last night .  Only reason I'm doing this is because I'm not sure exactly how I should transition.  TIA

Re: So now what do I do?

  • I went from BF to pumping (feeding expressed milk in bottles) and then formula.  For pumping I just gradually elongated the length of time between pumpings.  I didn't give myself a timeline to finish though.  There are tricks to dry you up.  Wear tight sports bras, take Benadryl (or is it Sudafed???), etc.  Hopefully others will have more ideas for drying you up.

  • I quit over 4.5 weeks, so this probably isn't helpful for you.  I replaced a nursing session with a bottle every week until I was down to 2 nursing sessions a day and then dd decided she preferred the bottle and stopped nursing on her own.  I've read that as long as long as you space it out by 3 days, you should be fine.   I definitely wouldn't quit all at once-that sounds really painful!

  • I've been slowly adding bottles.  I don't want to go cold turkey on DS, because he is old enough that it could upset him.  He prefers the bottle now and gets pretty much all his nutrients from there, but I still let him comfort nurse several times a day.   I pretty much kept adding bottles and if I became engorged (which was not often, because my supply was crappy) I would just have him nurse long enough to relieve it.  I didn't bother with the pump.  As long as I have a little supply and he wants to comfort nurse, I am fine doing it, though.  We may stop tomorrow, we may stop months from now.  So really, I am no help:)

I would just suggest making it gradual, to make it easier for both of you, mentally and physically.  Also, if you want to do it quicker, just nurse or pump long enough to relieve the engorgement once it becomes really uncomfortable.
