I am somewhat centrally located so I could really choose to deliver at Troy Beaumont, Royal Oak Beaumont, Crittendon, or HFWB (HFWB being the furthest away, but closest to both sets of in-laws). Does anyone know if there is a way to find out the costs of delivering at any of these hospitals? I thought I remember someone mentioning that Crittendon was a private hospital, so its costs were much higher, but I could be wrong. I also don't know which hospitals are public v. private. Obviously the cost doesn't really matter, it's the care that matters...but it would still be nice to know what to expect. Thanks for any help you can give!
Re: s/o Troy Beaumont post...
Really what matters the most is your health insurance and how much they cover. Mine covered 100% so the hospital could only charge them what my insurance company allows. This article helps to explain things better:

So I would look at what your insurance covers.
I imagine you have insurance- how is your plan set-up? The majority of times, that's what's going to determine your OOP expense, regardless of what the hospital charges. You can call the company up and figure out how your plan is set-up if you're not sure. It's pretty common that the cost is split, so the insurance might pay 80% and you pay 20%. Many instances there's a cap though- so once you've paid X-amount of dollars, insurance picks up the bill 100%. The important thing in choosing a hospital is to make sure it's in your insurance's network. If you have a out-of-network doctor or hospital, the insurance company pays less and you pay more
Ditto PP's. It depends on your insurance.
Also, stay FAR FAR away from RO Beaumont- I went to L&D there with some major complications. We (my ob who sent me by ambulance from her office) thought I was losing the baby, and the nurse (instead of comforting me while I waited for DH to arrive) stood outside my curtain bitching about the auto industry (this is after it took 20 minutes for them to register me, and made me stand at the counter the entire time). I was sobbing, and the only person that FINALLY came to sit with me after 15 minutes was a medical assistant who was like 17. Not to mention they blew out 3 of my veins, and 3 different residents came in and asked the SAME questions. I was there for over 8 hours when they finally told me that I was not having a m/c, that I had a massive cyst rupture from my endometriosis. They were insensitive and horrible. I will NEVER go back there if I have the choice to go elsewhere.
Ok, I checked my plan. 100% of pre/post natal care is covered, and 80% of delivery and nursery care is covered. I have $1000 max out of pocket for the year (BCBS). All four hospitals are in network. I wish there was a web site that ranked hospitals for specific services you're looking for.
Do you have a doctor yet? That might help make your decision. Most have a hospital preference.
I delivered out of Crittendon. We lived 1/2 mile from there, and my doctor worked out of there. Our pediatrician, at the time, was head of pediatrics. I had a wonderful experience. I liked the smaller setting.
I've never heard anyone have a bad experience at Troy Beaumont either.
I delivered @ RO Beaumont and had an overall great experience. I had a vaginal birth and everything went great. The Dr was outstanding, the L&D nurse that was there for the hours leading up to the delivery and as I delivered was AMAZING! There were some odd nurses in L&D throughout the night (I was induced) and then in postpartum there were 2 nurses that I didn't care for. But we also had 1 nurse that was amazing!!! I think the C/S rate depends on Dr. offices too! Good luck with wherever you decide to deliver.
I also agree that c/s rates definitely depend on the Dr.
Good luck!! Whatever hospital you choose
Agreed on all counts...except I didn't think the food was that bad. Maybe because I stuck to simple stuff like bagels and jello, lol.
I too had an absolutely wonderful experience at RO Beaumont. The nurses were fantastic- esp. the NICU nurses. There was an odd one here or there that we didn't really care for, but overall they were so great. We were there for about two weeks and I am still so overwhelmed and grateful for the care both DD and I received there.
I agree- I think your doctor makes a big difference. I love my drs. GL!
as a side note...my friend had a HORRIBLE experience with Troy Beaumont. She drove out of her way to go specifically to Troy and regrets every second of that drive. She hated all of her nurses and was very unhappy with her stay. I guess it just really depends. I think you could have horrible (or great) experience at any hospital.
I am having my baby at HFWB and I am thrilled. It is an amazing hospital and I love my DR. There are 9 OB's in the office and I have met 3 of them, all of whom I thought we great! Not to mention, it is a brand new hospital!!
I'm sure you'll be fine at any of these hospitals...they are all good from what I've heard. Bad experiences happen everywhere from time to time.
One thing about HFWB - yes, it is beautiful and brand new, but I was told to stay away for that very reason. A friend of my in the medical field said that they still have some kinks to work out there and it was recommended to me to go with a more "experienced" hospital. Just my two cents. I'm sure you'll be fine going there, but I would pick based on doctor first, hospital second. I'm due in 5-6 weeks and will deliver at either RO or Troy Beaumont - not sure yet. My doctors deliver at both of them so I just need to decide soon!
It is a new hospital, not new DR's. My ob/gyn and pcp have been with HFWB forever.
I had a good experience at RO Beaumont as well. I think it all boils down to your dr. and your delivery. As far as the highest c/s rate, that could be possible. But they also have the hightes birth rate as well so I'd be curious to see the percentages more than the #s. I actually didn't end up having a c-section even though I was in labor 22+ hours, had to be induced and had a sunny side up baby.
As far as the food, I honestly thought it was okay. I hadn't eaten in 3 days by the time I had my first meal (I had the flu when I delivered ) so perhaps I'm not the best one to ask! I doubt the food is great anywhere but if that's a big concern you can have DH or family visiting bring you whatever you're craving from the outside world.
Phew, I'm relieved to see some good posts about RO Beaumont. Everyone I know who has delivered there IRL has had nothing but amazing things to say. And so far any interaction I've had with the hospital through the u/s dept or when I was there for my m/cs has been positive.
I have no choice but to deliver there, as it's the only place my dr. delivers. I love both the drs at my practice and think they impact your experience a lot more than the hospital.
